2x GTX 1070 vs. GTX 1080

iPC

Im planning on doing a build this summer and I was wondering if I should go with a lesser monitor, motherboard, and cooling but with a GTX 1080, or a build with a better monitor, motherboard, and great cooling, but with a GTX 1070 that I can upgrade to SLI in a year. Here are the links: Build 1: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mT48TH Build 2: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/WdRNLk     Thank you!

So many questions about SLI/crossfire lately, if you can get a single more powerful card get that instead of 2 lower cards. Better off that way

Looks good but why 750W? You only need 650W for a 1080

And why founders edition?

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

I believe that with 750 you can have 2 gpu's. It is a small additional investment if you will. (I am not certain though)

Tough choices because the future of SLI as a mechanism of getting good performance is in jeopardy with DX12 and modern rendering techniques. Its not an easy call to be making. I went for 2x 970's last generation for price/performance and it turned out excellent as did the 2x 680's before it (the 2x7970 did not turn out well neither did the 5970 or the 4870X2 really). But I don't know if 2x 1070 will be a good solution. The last 6 months of SLI has been bad, Warhammer comes out tomorrow and its another game without SLI on release, made worse by the fact its sub 60 fps regularly on a 980 ti. When it adds DX12 support its doubtful there will be SLI support at all.

I don't think crossfire/SLI is a good thing to plan for, I also don't think the 1080 is good value for money compared to the 1070 or indeed the 1080 ti (whenever that comes). Its a $700 314mm^2, that in its historical context is an expensive GPU.

The best thing to keep in mind- if you're planning on OCing your GPU's, which you're probably going to do, I would highly recommend to get an open-air cooled GPU. In a case where you're volume restricted (case size), which you're not- then founder's would be good.

So two things I would change: add better case fans for optimal airflow, and get open-air cooled GPU's.

Other than that, GAME ON.

Well your location is behind me, so that means EU :P

If you are in EU, don't expect low prices.

Even in US I don't think they will sell GTX 1080 for 599$. Maybe some small form of it, with no OC and horrible cooling.

Other cards will probbably cost more.

The future of SLI is not looking great.  I suggest either getting a 1070 and upgrade to 1080 Ti next year, or just get a 1080.  If you go the 1070 route, you'll easily be able to sell it next year when 1080 Ti comes out and likely get 3/4 of what you paid initially.  People generally are willing to pay good money for used parts that are still current.
