GTX 1080 cannot maintain its boost clock while gaming and slows down to 1607 Mhz

Im not sure about the 980 Ti, but I know that GK104 needed bios modding to add a higher voltage to unlock the full OC possibility. Out of the box I couldnt go much past 1450 Mhz on my 970s, but then after bios modding they can run at 1550 Mhz with 1.28v.

Hmm I am running stock BIOS and hitting 1440MHz easily on my 980 Ti... weird. Any recommended BIOSes?

Are you using the voltage tool, or adding +50mv in AB / PCX?  Cause...the latter won't do anything.  I'm guessing you're not running a custom bios either?

Yea, I'm sitting at a comfy 1.21GHz lol. I'm not terribly upset though because I ended up only paying $600 for my Classy, but I feel like any other option would have yielded better results.

 

Totally not regretting my decision to purchase it though, because uhh... Free 1080!

Yea, I'm not going to risk changing the BIOS for a card that can't do anything on stock.

Like I said I dont know how the 980 Ti because it uses a different GPU. There was a maxwell bios editing tool for the 970 / 980, you would load and edit the stock bios on the cards you had.

It has 2 bios slots for that very reason.

So, let me get this straight.  You bought a classy...kept it on air, didn't get a bios made, and are complaining that it's a bad overclocker.

All the initial hype of 2100Mhz+ boost clock while only running at 67C with the reference cooler......fooled many reviewers.

 

Now I want to see if the myth that the card will boost to 2500Mhz with water cooling is true, that I see so many Nvidia fanboys claim.

Not going through the effort because:

 

1) Stock settings should go a lot further. If the stock settings were promising, I would have gone under water and changed BIOS, but as it is, I don't feel like pumping dumb amounts of voltage and spending money on an enthusiast setup that's days away from being outdated just to get an acceptable overclock.

 

2) I've owned the GPU for a little more than a month, and I've known I was replacing the GPU for a couple weeks now, so I don't feel like doing anything to the card.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Given the GTX1080 has a lower TDP than many older cards, this reference cooler must suck worse than older designs. Please wait for partner versions people!

The stock bios versions are fine...if you're looking for a small overclock.  But, Maxwell runs better when it's cooler.  So, keeping it on air, was your first mistake.

What's the ASIC quality?  Are you using GPUz sensors tab to monitor your overclock?  What are you using to add voltage?  What's your ambient temps?  Did you set a custom fan curve?

If you're going to replace it, that's fine...good on ya.  But, don't complain about it being a bad overclocker, without doing ANY of the things that are really needed in order to make them overclock well.  lol, good god

I'd bet money the biggest problem with that card, is it's user....  PEBKAC

My 980 achieved +225MHz just fine at 80C, my 970 did +200MHz just fine too at the same temp. Both overclocks were validated with 10+ hours of being under max load.

Pretty sure it's irrelevant, especially considering my 980 hit its overclock with a 70% ASIC. My 980 Ti is 66.4% however.

idk and no. The GPU doesn't even hit 70C under load on air.

You can't add voltage with AB and PCX on the Classy.  You have to use the voltage tool.

The 980 and 970 are GM204s, not GM200s.  Overclocking them is a completely different thing.  Especially the Classy.  You took a step up in the game, without knowing what you're doing.  

Yes...you are an idiot.  You bought into marketing hype on a card built for LN2 cooling because you thought it'd just lay down and give you an awesome overclock without having to work for it.  lol  It is quite entertaining though.  There are a couple hundred jokers just like you on the EVGA forums too.

I would love to go with a non-reference design but a passive cooled SFF case is not the best place for a non-blower card. It looks like overclocking won't be an issue tho if you play around with fan speed settings, so I'm not too concerned about the card its self, but the extra cost is still a pain.

If you game using headphones, the cooler noise will be a non-issue.

Just so we're clear, I didn't step into a game. I bought the cheapest GTX 980 Ti available, I have a total of $600 invested into this card, well below MSRP. Pretty damn good sale for a card titled, "Classified," huh? I didn't buy into marketing hype, I didn't go "balls to the walls," I just got the cheapest item with the highest level of performance. I used tools I was already familiar with, and saw no success. Considering this is a mere hobby, not something I mock people over as if it were going out of fashion, I neglected further researching the card and assumed it was just a bad chip, and was stunned it would be put on a Classified board. I hadn't a single idea of reaching an absurd clock nor did I ever expect being able to achieve that on my card as I wasn't interested in going for a full water-cooled loop or other exotic cooling methods, I just wanted a 980 Ti for cheap and a modest overclock, and I thought this Classy could give me that.

 

I'm a casual hobbyist with a fetish for high-end equipment, but it's nice to see that there's an extremely unpleasant community surrounding the "over-the-top" enthusiast segment. Sorry for making what I thought was an excellent purchase.

I've got a GTX 980 Classified, and I also have not been able to OC it more in a worthwhile manor, but even using just the factory OC, it's still runs bloody well :)
