AD7200_un_V1_1185_large_0.00_20160125105

TP-Link has launched their Talon AD7200 router. World's first, to support the newest 802.11AD wireless spec that runs on the 60GHz band, which is faster than gigabit lan.

Running on 802.11AD, users can basically download 4K movies just under 8 minutes, 100 photos in a second or less, and HD movie less than 40 seconds. it's now available at most e-tailer for a cheap price of $349.99

I'm still running on 802.11G 9_9

so are there actually devices that can receive AD wifi?

The Snapdragon 820 has support for it hardware wise. I don't know if any Android device has support for it in software though.

Well 802.11AD is backwards compatible with older devices so you could buy this now and then once devices that support 802.11AD come out, make use of the higher speed.

this is really old news:

WiGig is kinda' shitty:

  • low range
  • cannot penetrate walls; even the slightest obstacle can cause a drop in data transfer speeds

ah ok, but wouldn't it be better for these new technologies to focus on sustained 50 Mbit up & down through walls and such instead of this really high performance thing with shit wall penetration?

But is it really?  I mean, quoting a Mbps that's more than 1000 is one thing, but does it actually achieve those speeds?

60GHz runs at 4.6Gb/s vs gigabit that runs at 1Gb/s. Will it actually run at that speed in the real world. Probably not.

For regular WiFi it is really hard to just go "let's focus on making it sustained 50Mbps". At the end of the day, getting reliable speeds is a matter of getting a clean signal, and that is extremely hard when you got things like multipathing, other interference and objects dampening the signal. It's not so much a technology problem as it is a problem with the laws of nature.

If you are talking about 802.11ad then don't worry, it is not meant to replace 802.11ac. The intention is to have ad for some particular use cases (maybe wireless docking stations, displays and such) and ac for your ever day web browsing.

I don't really think 802.11ad makes sense to have in a router. It will be far more useful in peer-to-peer scenarios.

With the optional LoL addon, this is what happens when it activates the 4600 Mbps super speed mode xD

Looks super cool. Hopefully this standard is adopted more broadly and more devices can utilize it's power.

I agree!

this does not make any fucking sense at all

to provide that bandwidth, your source needs a hardline connection to the router or be in the same room (for a WiGig connection), then the router needs to be in the same room with the destination device - why not provide a hardline connection to the destination in the 1st place?

I didn't

I just pointed out the fact that all of this is not exactly new info - the tech specs were already known

also, from a consumer perspective, the existence of this router does not make any sense at all - it's like putting a waterblock on a GeForce 210 xD

No more like putting a waterblock to onboard graphics. Oh wait...

A press event was held in Hong Kong on 18/05 for this router, and a live demo with the Acer Travelmate P446 Notebook, the first notebook with 802.11ad receiver in the world was shown there. This is the result.
