The GTX 980 is a little better but much more expensive, so the R9 390 is much better value for money.

 

However, it's even better to wait for the new cards launching soon.

980, but those 2 cards are different pricing tiers. The 980´s price puts it against the Nano, which is better.

You should just wait and get a GTX 1080

they are completely different price points. the 980 is way more expensive. The 390 is much higher price/performance.

 

but all of this is irrelevant because new GPUs come out next month, in which case you can get a new one with more power for the same price or a 390/980 for much cheaper.

GTX 980...if they cost about the same make sure you grab the nvidia card cause it's worth a lot more and is faster in games across the board. Better features, better softwares, lower power consumption and higher performance in games.

This is a trick question. You need to wait a few weeks for the Pascal cards. The 1080, which is in the same price-bracket as the 980, is going to beat the living crap out of the 980. If you really want the best bang for your buck? Get a 1070 instead. The 1070 alone will be able to outperform the 980, (and it's $200 cheaper).

These are not directly competing cards. The 390X and 980 are direct competitors. That being said, just wait for reviews on the 1080/1070 first as well as Polaris (if you can hold out a little longer). Prices of the previous gen cards will drop significantly and you will kick yourself. ;)
