Windows won't boot with 16GB of RAM but will with 12

Hi

I wanted to upgrade the RAM on the PC I run as a home nas/plex server as I also run some vms.

I was running 8GB with 4 2GB sticks working fine. (So I know all the slots work)

I've picked up 4 crucial 4GB DDR3 - 1333 (PC3 10600) DIMMS.

When I install all 4 all 16GB are picked up in the BIOS, Windows goes to boot but then I get an error message saying;

Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you.

If you'd like to know more, you can search online later for this error: ACPI BIOS ERROR

12GB (ie 3 DIMMS) will run fine but that 4th DIMM always causes the same issue.

PC is a:

Foxconn H55M-S

Intel i3 540

It is running at the moment with 12GB but since I have the 4th DIMM and the slot for it I would quite like to get it running with 16GB.

If any one is able to suggest anything I would be very grateful.

Thank you

Absolutely. Process of elimination. Find a slot that works for sure and run all your sticks of ram through it to isolate any bad sticks.  Then check the other slots with your known good ram.  Tedious, but thorough.

Thank you both for your replies.

I have done as you say. All slots seem to be OK and any combination of 3 DIMMs and 3 slots works fine. Adding a 4th DIMM in any slot causes the same issue.

I should add that the RAM has come out of a working machine where all 4 were installed for 16GB of RAM.

Any ideas?

Thanks

ANY 4th DIMM causes issue?  Or is it a particular stick?

Any 4th DIMM

All the DIMMS work fine on their own or in combination up to 3 at a time.

Put a 4th DIMM in and it will blue screen

This sounds weird.. :S

Does your board support 16GB of ram?

It's not a race to the bottom.

Bios update, intel chipset update? Could try memtest86 but I don't think it's ram.

We have a winner:

H55M-S Fix use 16G memory install OS will BULE screen issue,Add AHCI function, and fix HDD size show error A21F1P04 3.22MB 4/20/2011

Thank you raphidy I had forgotten it wasn't on the most recent.

I have a feeling however that I tried to update it before and I couldn't make it work.

Will try again and let you know how I get on.
