FTTP (Real Fibre) finally being rolled out in the UK

yeah the upload speed is the problem.

my speeds are 220 Mbit down and 25 up. I am not complaining about the down but i like the fibre potential to have the same up speeds as down.

I have 100 Mbit/s UP/DOWN. That's fastest internet packet in my country. But it costs 5$ for me. I think it's good. Actually i'd love to have 250 Mbit/s DOWN and 25 UP if cost does not go 10$ +

Computer users fall into two groups:
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

Having your own fiber makes symmetric speeds very doable, so you'd probably get a 200/200 or even higher package.

That would be nice, but i am sure Virgin could already give us better than we have now.....150/50 would be better than 200/12 that i have now, porn downloads fast enough at 150mbit ;)

Sorry should have made it more clear, "Realisticaly what difference will that make" TO ME, I already have 100Mbps the lines ability to take more data will not increase that speed

A FTTP line will be significantly faster than a FTTC line (especially if you are not that close to your street cabinet). The last wee bit of copper to your house from the cabinet is actually a pretty significant bottleneck.

BT have offered FTTP lines for quite some time, they're not very popular cause they are ridiculously overpriced, but they are 300Mbps (which is actually quite slow for FTTP). Obviously, there is potential for 1Gbps - 10Gbps or above. Which you would never achieve with copper. I think most of the frustration with the FTTC roll out comes from the fact it was heavily subsidised by the government, lacked ambition, and seems more like a stop gap that a proper infrastructure overhaul. For example, my line is an exchange only copper line, which connects straight to the exchange (i.e. doesn't connect via a cabinet). So I'm stuck on copper until BT start rolling out FTTP at reasonable prices. Or they decide to fit an extra cabinet to my street, and run fibre to that, silly situation tbh.

The majority of the UK is running on FTTC (or Fibre To The Cabinet) which was installed by BT over the last 5 years, Virgin services are only available to less than 10% of the entire country.

Besides that you can already pay BT a £150 fee and have the fibre extended all the way to your house (FTTP or Fibre To The Property) providing your local exchange has the required infrastructure in place to handle it.

At this point Virgin are just playing catch up to BT, strangely though BT still seem insistent on limiting the bandwidth available on their own network quite severely meaning despite Virgin running on older technology than the Infinity network Virgin still offer way faster speeds.

So you happen to have any of know of where can I find information on asking BT to extend fibre to my home for £150?

He's wildly wrong with that. The prices are very expensive.

A £750 connection fee, monthly rental of £99 (for 3 years) and a distance based charge of £3.50 per metre

bt are behyind where it matters speed...not to mention, even though my area was upgraded to fiber years ago, becasue im connected directly to the exchange i cant get fiber from BT or sky. bullshit springs to mind.

Don't forget that Virgin can throttle you down if you download more than they like. Up to 65%. So if you have 150Mbps it will be ~52.5Mbps. In reality it goes down even further for websites like youtube.

virgins throttle policy is fairly reasonable.  if you upload too much then your upload speed gets throttled for an hour. if you have stopped uploadng then after that hour then your upload speed is no longer throttled.

i would rather have mor upload than DL but im ok with virgin.  200/12 for £35 a month

Apparently, Virgin's network is so designed that to give a significant boost to upload would require a massive amount of work. Their network is not designed to handle more upload. Massively shortsighted if you ask me, with more and more people streaming, video calling etc.
