Why do people hate the progressive nature of the engineering of these SoCs?

I'm all for them developing more cores. If it produces a faster chip, what is wrong? 

If it kills your battery faster than already, then it might not be a good idea. But if your battery life can sustain for the same duration, then by all means give me 10 cores.

Because big.LITTLE is a ridiculously convoluted and expensive solution to a problem that was already solved by managing turbo states.

Use the right tool for the job. What the Hell are you doing on a phone that needs as many cores as your laptop or desktop? It's absolutely ridiculous. Apple's SOCs get away with 2 cores and still competing right up against the best 8-core SOCs in the phone market. If Apple increased its battery capacity, it wouldn't be a contest. This is all the proof needed to say you can't avoid big cores.

I should further explain that, how the OSes handle their chips could possibly affect the results in a benchmark.


Having 4 fast low powered cores and 4 fast high powered cores would be better than 1 fast high powered core and 1 slower lower powered core. (I'm not sure about how Apple has their SoCs actually laid out, I guess I really don't care to know.)

 

Though if I recall what you were describing was a "Quad Core" with 2 fast higher cores and 2 slow lower powered cores. That would be fine if Google (or an OEM) could make background apps and services less intensive on the CPU.

I suspect that by having less or less intensive background apps and services would improve the benchmark scores and real-world performance. 

 


I suppose I might as well more properly acknowledge that post you made that I said "k den" to. 


Look, this thread wasn't about whether or not the focus of phone SoCs should be shifted away from multi-core into faster/better single core SoCs...


The reason I felt that the Exynos 7420/8890 or Snapdragon 808/820 are better SoCs in general is because they're very good performing SoCs. Sure Apple's A9 or A9X SoCs do give those 4 SoCs I listed and felt were better that are found in many Android phones of yesteryear and this year a "run for their money" so to speak. 


I won't deny that I don't have any background in this kind of stuff I do find it interesting to an extent, but like I'm a sophomore in high school. Though if I wanted to my school does have very good engineering and technical programs and what not if that was something I'm interested in. That is however not my interest. My interest lies mostly with digital media arts and maybe programming or game design or animation but at least two of those fit under the Digital Media Arts.

No, it has nothing to do with it. Apps are apps and benchmarks are benchmarks. Clearly you can get all the performance and all the low power by having a superior core design while having far fewer cores.

The big.little implementation is still very basic at this point, with very little software support, but that is due to how new big.little is.

It can make a ton of sense for power-sensitive devices to have a set of low-power cores and high-power cores.

 

It most certainly has its technical benefits over using a single set of cores, but that is still hidden due to the little software support in its current state.

More cores will, ultimately, be the direction to go anyway. So what's the point in ignoring it right now?

You will not want to increase cpu speed, you'll just increase heat and power consumption.
