Prices for both, and what do you want to use them for?

970:

nvidia features

lower power consumption

lower heat output (doesnt mean lower temperature)

lower cpu overhead <--- most important for weaker cpus

390:

more raw gpu horsepower

more VRAM

prices averagely are cheaper (though depending on your local market)

so... whats your full system spec?

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

390:

slightly higher performance

supposedly far less AMD driver issues than in the past, based on what I see on the internet

more vram (8GB will be very useful for multi-monitor or 4k gaming)

970:

lower power consumption

lower temperatures

less noise

shadowplay (which I always use and think is great)

more overclocking for the people who love to push MHz

CUDA

Personally I would go with a 970 because I need HDMI 2.0, I really need shadowplay, and I prefer the lower temperatures and noise

But a lot of people are buying the 390 because of better performance per dollar, which is what most “gamers” care about

I guess I'd favor the 390 in your case, though you won't really go wrong with either.

R9 390 all the way. You can get an XFX model, for £273 on Amazon

https://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Radeon-Graphics-Card-GDDR5/dp/B00ZCBDUXQ/ref=sr_1_10?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1461769661&sr=1-10&keywords=R9+390

But if you can wait a little longer, i'd hold back for Polaris.

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

for the xeon, the r9 390 will perform better averagely in games

if you're in to nvidia's features, i suggest you wait till pascal, as the gtx 970 is sort of an older card by now

390 if you want to buy right now. Can find one for 250 pounds. Although, with Polaris and Pascal close, might be worth waiting.

you'd have to explain to me how the GTX 970 is ''sort of an older card by now'' when the R9 390 which is a rebrand of a last gen card that was released in 2013...so 2 years older in it's design, is not?

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |

Counts as like a Haswell Refresh with the 290 series being Haswell.

the gtx 970 is sort of an older card because pascal is releasing soon

the r9 390 is an older card yes, but the performance is still there for this tier of gpu
