Uses for a Dell XPS 13

My dad just recently bought a Dell XPS 13 inch model 9343 ( yes, this is an older version )

I bought the highest specs on this laptop and I want first thoughts from you guys. My dad bought it for my birthday and I really want to know what I could expect from this computer.

This computer has 13.3" QHD+ (3200 x 1800) Backlit WLED TouchScreen, 5th Generation Intel Core i7-5500U (4M Cache, up to 3.00 GHz), 8GB DDR3 RAM / 256GB SSD / Intel HD Graphics 5500, and a 64-bit Windows 8.1.

Because of the 5th Gen Core i7 and the Intel HD5500, I also want thoughts about the gaming experiences. I do play graphic consuming games such as Grand Theft Auto 5, Farcry Primal, etc. Please tell what the frame rate could be on low settings and what games I can play without the experience of lag. Thank you :)

5fps, maybe 6. Gaming on the HD5500 at 3200x1800 is not going to happen, even in a game like Dota 2 or CS:GO. It's a work-grade laptop, not a gaming one

Unfortunately, you will have no FPS at all on any of those games. This isn't a iGPU you can play on. Reviews of the chip quote you'd get around 15 fps on WoW with mid-high settings @ 1080p, let alone 3200 x 1800 that your pc has. Let's be honest, WoW isn't a graphically demanding game in any way. Maybe you could play minecraft at best? but I wouldn't even count on that.

Well I have seen better frame rates on 1280x720 (which sucks :( ) I'm just asking for recommendations on which games i can play at a higher frame rate without that much of a lag

agreed. I don't think you'd be able to run anything with "playable" fps apart from 2D games like Factorio or as such.

Hence why buying a Luxury work laptop for gaming is usually ill advised

Yep, there are different uses for laptops. a dell business/portable laptop is not meant to play anything on. It's meant for spreadsheets, browsing and emails. no more

Even if he tried to play 3D games on it, it would probably overheat as it isn't meant for that kind of load.

Likely - the XPS15 is what you can game on, provided you buy the 960M version.

It's a great laptop but it's solely a work-grade machine - a high end media device.

The laptop itself is great. You'd get quick response time for anything non-gaming related.

Spreadsheets, word, emails, browsing... youtube as well. Would probably work great to process the Wan Show.

Nah, rendering on it is a pain - the i7 is a dual-core so essentially an i3 with more cache

Any CPU followed by "U" is a dual-core 15W chip using low voltage
"M" ones are not soldered on and can be upgraded
"H" ones are soldered
"Q" ones are quad-cores

Step 1: Set your expectations low

Step 2: Expect any game to run poorly above 1280x720

Step 3: Watch the iGPU get rekt by low end mobile dGPU from 2010

On the bright side, you won't be seeing the sub 2 hours battery life this laptop does with its low end mobile dGPU from 2010. And 2 hours exactly with the low power, extreme low end, "power saving" dGPU from 2009 (it has 2).

Well, the extra pixel density is not going to be much help. Should have stuck to 1080p for the extra battery life. Should have gotten an iris model though I believe they just began that if you wanted some gaming. I use mine for minor stuff like a VM for Ubuntu. Basic work like research, reports, homework. You will still have above average battery life.  Mine only difference is the i5 sky lake model non iris and 1080p screen and minor random upgrades to the XPS.
