Best headphones under 200$

niofalpha

So I need a new pair of headphones, since my current pair is dying.

What's a good pair? I was considering HD 598's (do these need a DAC?)

Dac/ Amp has to be factored into the price. No mic options are ok if they're on the cheaper side.

No Razer

Requirements: Good audio quality, comfortable, around the same weight as Corsair V2100s, closed ear.

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

i7 9700K (5.2Ghz @1.2V); MSI Z390 Gaming Edge AC; Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16GB 3200 CAS 16; H100i RGB Platinum; Samsung 970 Evo 1TB; Samsung 850 Evo 500GB; WD Black 3 TB; Phanteks 350x; Corsair RM19750w.

Laptop: Dell XPS 15 4K 9750H GTX 1650 16GB Ram 256GB SSD

Spoiler

sex hahaha

AKG K701/K702 will work just fine plugged into your motherboard... so no need for a dac or amp.

You never NEED a DAC, A headphone amp maybe but not a DAC. If you can afford it there are a lot of bundles with Focusrite Scarlett DAC, MIC and Headphones for ~300 USD.

If not go for the M50X's, probably the most comfortable closed can headphones I have ever tried and they should be around 150, with the extra $50 you could get a secondhand M-Audio M-track or Fast-Track DAC. I use a Fast Track to my Xenyx 802 to my Tannoy R5A's, my USAudio 15" and a cheap set of sennheisers

Sounds like you got a good setup coming along bro, can't wait for results :)

OP wanted closed 'phones. As much as I like my K702, it is also rather low sensitivity so if you want to lose your hearing faster you will need an amp.

So I'd suggest the K550 instead, which I also have. It is even cheaper than the K702, they are closed, good sound overall but personally I really prefer open 'phones and I've yet to find any closed pair sound as good. Some have described the K550 as the closed version of the K702 which is what lead me to get some to try, but they're not remotely the same thing.

I can only speak on behalf of the pair I own in terms of closed-back headphones. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x sound wonderful, but their sound signature is very flat, as they are supposed to be. Don't expect a warm signature, but instead "what the artist intended". Just imagine wearing them while they're recording it in the studio, essentially.

I'd also recommend picking up some aftermarket velour pads, as the pleather pads can get uncomfortable fairly easily. One nice inclusion though is the leather pouch they give you with multiple cables.

In what world is the M50x not a V-shaped headphone? Certainly not this world.

OP you do not need a other dac than the one that is build in on your motherboard and if you were getting a dac you would also have to buy a amp otherwise you would just have a nice looking brick. The hd 598 you are looking at are open and you want closed, so they are out of the picture. I would like to recomend AKG K553 pro, they have a big soundstage for closed headphones and they are a "flat" in their signature, but what sound signature do you like?

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M
