Shouldn't there be just a bit of outrage at Rockstar for the torture scene?

First of all you guys need to start tagging your posts.

Secondly, I think some of the outrage at Rockstar is warranted. I know that violence in games is sometimes necessary. "No Russian" was very necessary to explore the plot of the game. When Makarov was hanging and kicking in the end of MW3, it was necessary and satisfying.

This torture scene in GTA however, I believe was added simply for shock value and simply because they thought it was cool. I am not sensitive to this sort of stuff.

When making this scene, someone at Rockstar should have known at least that this would be controversial. Torture is a very real thing that happens to very real people in the Middle East, in Africa, and in Russia every damn day. Someone in charge at Rockstar should have realized that most people would not find comfort in the scene, not find it funny, and would probably find it a bit disgusting.

They should have at least made it optional. They should have given me the option of turning it off if I wanted to. They knew it was controversial, they knew many people wouldn't like it, they should have acted.

To all the people who played the scene, be honest. If you had the choice of turning off the torture scene, would you have done it? Do you not agree that maybe Rockstar made a bad call in making this scene a requirement?

If games have the right to add shock value, then I, as a gamer and as someone who financially supports their careers, have the right to complain.

Sorry for your loss, but is there any need to bring it up?

Some people called me a pussy because they thought I am too sensitive

There shouldnt be, they show something that many people dont realize is STILL happening today to loads of people and R brought that to the mainstream media, instead of hiding it and making it taboo or whatever.

Maybe now that a lot more people know about torture, there might be protests to stop torturing prisoners like loads of countries are doing.

IMO

but nobody learns about torture in the real world from what they see in a video game.

Big movies like Casino and a lot of smaller movies also have brutal torture scenes, and sure, some people take offence, but that doesn't mean it should be censored. As you yourself stated, torture does occour in the real world, and as an art form video games reflect on what happens in the real world. Rockstar is mearly reflecting the world into their game.

Well they gotta learn it from somewhere.

Also its a 18+ rated game, they could put anything they want in there with that rating

But.. it's a game?

Playing video games like GTA V and tetris mean you have a 97% chance of being a mass murderer. Damnit where do you get your news? You should check out some reliable sources, like fox news.

Yes, you have the right to complain, and I think that the whole idea of that scene being optional is good, but they way you went about presenting this was terrible.

First of all, I am sorry that you watched your grandmother die, but that is completely irrelevant to the story. Your grandmother was not tortured to death, and there would be no gore. My grandmother also had a heart attack and unfortunately died in hospital due to the events that followed and I know that those kinds of deaths are the most common, and the most peaceful. Your grandmother and GTA V are irrelevant.

Secondly, we all know that grand theft auto is a very violent game, full of swearing, gore sex and drugs. It is constantly brought up in the media and a subject of conversation. You can't buy the game and then expect it to not have gore, you would be foolish to do so. So what if they added it for 'shock value'? They have every right to do so, and most people couldn't give two shits about it.

Lastly, cut scenes are skippable, yes they may mask loading screens but they don't last very long/

I think it's great. It's 18+ and there is worse in movies. Maybe after this some parents will start giving a damn instead of buying their 13 year old every rated M game under the sun.

Rockstar always causes controversy, there's always something in every game, that's just the way they make games, if people doesn't like it, don't play the game, there's always some kind of strong content or some racial stereotypes and stuff like that

This is simply how Rockstar does stuff, and they have every right to, just like Bill Burr said, in comedy (entertainment) people will always get offended, but only at what they want to be offended by. You're never gonna see the fat dude be offended at the misogynistic joke, or the PETA guy offended at a fat joke. Not bustin' balls, but I feel like that's the same situation here.

If it bothers you, don't play it then.  There are several violent things in GTA.  Torture is a real thing.  It's horrific and disgusting.  That was the point!  Many people are oblivious to what unethical things go on in the government.

My PC specifications are in my profile.

I agree with what everyone else said about it being R18+
Also, like we've said, it has shock-value, so it comes across as more serious. (Not that I've actually seen it). But Saints Row has always been the OTT version of GTA, so maybe the seriousness is a good thing? To differentiate away from Saints Row

Maybe I'm just looking too deep into it... :P

people are run over by cars all over the world all the time and there are probably a lot more of them than the ones being tortured,

getting run over by a car is very brutal and terrible yet in gta you probably run over 15 people a minute sooo what should that be censored too?

Not trying to be a dick but it's an 18+ game so yeah if you are offended don't play it man you have every right to.

We have characters that when black and commit one star crimes automatically have it bumped up to two stars, and you are worried about this? What a shame.

You automatically get bumped up to two stars when you evade the police.. It happens for all of the characters.

Taking offense is all up to the individual and whether they can put the controller down and walk away from it.  It's not Rockstar's responsibility to shape a game to cater to every single type of person.  It's not different than walking away from say the latest iteration of Saw or Hostel at a theater or turning off the latest track from Eminem.

The only outrage with this game that I feel is warranted is towards dumb parents buying this game for their minor age kids.  It's rated M for a reason.

I actually thought it was a necessary scene to show the depravity of Trevor's character which contrasts some of his softer moments and makes his character one that's not only interesting to play but also provides a point of analysis in the satirical nature of the game.
