I just bought 980 ti for good price. Dumb move or justifiable?

Kickflapper

I know the new Pascal is around the corner, but with no really information when the consumer versions of the 1070 or 1080 are actually coming out, and unknown cost, and performance upgrade.  I broke down and bought the EVGA 980ti Classified edition card for 580.00. I feel like the 980 ti is proven and the Classified edition was the added kicker. I plan on gaming at 1080p at 144hz for a while and possibly going to 1440p in the future. What do you guys think?

Enjoy your card, and the envy you'll feel, it really depends on you, if you're going to be jealous of everyone who's going to be gaming at 4k 60fps straight with the 1080 or wtever its called even though it costs like $550, go ahead, also wts your CPU, if its too weak itll bottleneck 980ti, good luck gaming on a bottlenecked 980ti i tried it, and had to change my cpu to an i7, soo consider having a 4790k is good, other than that, its bad

1. The 1080 isn't going to be all that much better than the 980ti.

2. You don't need an i7 to push a 980ti.

I think it is a good buy.  I predict the performance/power ratio for 1080 for 980 ti will be similar to the 980 and the 780 ti.  Which is marginal to say at best.

I don't know why some people are stupid enough to think that whatever card is being sold today will stop working when Pascal or Polaris comes along.

Not to mention many people think that the upcoming games will only be DX12 and their cards will be useless.  DX11 still has a long way to go.  In fact it still performs better and is more stable and smooth compared to 12.  Developers would be committing suicide if they neglect older versions of DX.  Heck DX10 is still widely supported.

If one thinks they're getting a great deal on a gpu, enjoy it.  It'll be around for a while.

Its late in the 28nm cycle, the cards are very mature and ought to be cheaper than they are. If the silicon cycle in any way returns to a reasonable path like before then we should be looking at 2x performance at the same price point with Pascal/Polaris. Ultimately the best value from these high end cards comes from buying them around when they come out, that way you maximise their price/performance because despite discounts now their performance will be mid range compared to the latest architecture. Those discounts are to clear inventory to unsuspecting people who don't know new silicon is producing new cards.
