Routers, networking, and the war against ISP hardware.

Hello!

As my first post in a while I'm going to ask for some suggestions on affordable ($150 max) routers that beat the crap out of the standard one from my ISP, Comcast.

They're charging out the ass for "hardware rental" and I need to find an option to help my parents save the extra $200/year for a router that drops signal every time more than 5 devices are connected.

Some things I'm looking for include a low price, easy setup, strong signal that wont drop if I'm on the other side of the house with my laptop and something solid so my mom stops disconnecting while player her various games.

Would I also need a modem? I've never done networking of any kind so if a modem is outdated please forgive me.

My main goal is to stop my parents from renting the POS router from that scumbag company who charges way too much.

Yes, you will either need a modem+router combo unit, or, a modem and a separate router.

Asus RT AC66U is an amazing router, I've been using one every day with 20+ devices connected for over a year now and it's worked flawlessly.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

Also, if you by any chance have t-mobile, you can get an AC-68U for free from them, as long as you have t-mobile.

So that just leaves a $50-100 modem.

My sister has the C7 from TPlink. Been a rock solid router from what see has said. When my wireless N router dies, Ill probably upgrade to that one myself.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
