Holoportation from Microsoft

This technology will bring a whole new level of "Skype calling".

Microsoft calls it "Holoportation" because it can teleport a 3D image of an object (person, animal, furniture etc.) to your room if you have all the bits and pieces required to do so. 

You can not only have a live session (real-time) with someone but you can replay it and adjust the way it is displayed ie. resize it.

This is probably even more exciting than VR headsets since it can be applied to your surroundings instead of covering them completely. Im sure in the far future this will be applied to escorting and other adult content.

Mark my words! I have said it before but not on the internet. So in a couple years when the second round of more refined headsets come out at a cheaper price a company is going to create a community like a suburb for VR with multiple people. Allowing for interactions and a community just like real life but virtual. Then that will lead to games like GTA V where you can kill people and that will cause an uproar. Then it will look so real people get addicted and want to live in their virtual world because their life sucks. Then you will have technology advance a bit more and bam we are uploaded or consciousness to a virtual world when we die to live forever with whoever we want. Well at that point that proves that our world has a very good chance of being fake. 

 

TLDR: Internet 2.0 for VR world just like real world psychological problems occur.

$3000 isn't really that much for a product such as this (currently). It's brand spanking new technology, actively in development and still in it's alpha stage, or earlier.

 

This would be genius for business meetings. If they would redevelop (eventually) the actual AR headset to be smaller, then they would be golden.

 

In the consumer household, this would be a really awesome feature. However, a lot of people don't even have the setup in their own home to support this (space/room for the hologram, space for you to move around, etc).

I still remember 4K TV that cost over (if I remember correctly) over $500,000. So considering the current state of the "hololens" and "holoportation" technology, it will within a few years be significantly less costly to buy.

I like to think of this as DVDHD vs Blueray. VR is DVDHD and Hololens is Blueray.

i don't think you people understand how this actually works. this is not rly different from an ar/vr setup on a bigger scale

 

 

this was already done on oculus dev kist using kinects. obviously the fidelity was not quite as good due to the limitations of the kinect but the end results was the same. It is cool, don't get me wrong it's nice but it has more limitations than people realize and was already done but random programmers fooling around with kinects. No reason to use a hololens for this when any vr/ar headset would work.

that's what I'm waiting for - all these VR headsets are a pain for someone like me. Cursed with bad eyes (prefer glasses over contacts) and a jimmy neutron sized head!

i think when hololens goes retail, buyers will be upset, because microsoft keep cheating on the way it should look like, they keep showing pre-rendered scenes, when the original one is way more glitchy and laggy than what they would like you to believe it is, like on E3 and minecraft, with the glasses that looks nothing like it, and i do believe this will come back and bite them on the derriere, when ppl will start reviewing them, they will expect something and get something completly different

Notice enormous lag system has. Also it uses a bunch of depth sensing cameras and requires a good bit of processing. Interesting concept but niche product and proprietary solution at best.

One good thing out of this though is that this will only fuel the competition. So hopefully eventually we will get accurate hand tracking in VR without controllers and will all grow massive shoulder muscles by lifting our hands up and down all day. Either that or injury bordering on atrophy
