Mantle API

Is Mantle API dead? I have been searching on Google and all I know now is that NVidia did not support AMD and some complicated things I didn't really bother to read. I have been waiting with my Rig that is fully compatible with Mantle and this random thread on Facebook tell me that Mantle is RIP. Is this true?

Mantle has now essentially been encorporated and taken into DX12; which is essentially what mantle aimed to be and much more :)

Oh, thanks! :) I'm worried cause I heard a lot about Mantle being really good so I built a Mantle compatible rig. Well my GPUs doesn't support DX12. But my APU do. Just need to get DX12 compatible GPU.

You mean Mantle's design has been incorporated into Vulkan, not DX12. Vulkan is the open sourced alternative to DX12, that is compatible with all PC OS platforms, while DX12 is only compatible with Windows 10.

Mantle was only made because there was no news of a low level API ever coming to PC, then Microsoft decided to announce DX12 a while after AMD had announced they were working on mantle, making it irrelevant since most devs would just support that instead of Mantle (especially considering Nvidia didn't seems to want anything to do with Mantle).

Now, like the others have said, Vulkan is essentially the successor to Mantle, but is supported by the most/all of the major players. (AMD, Nvidia, Intel, Qualcomm, etc...)

AMD told devs to use DX12 instead of Mantle, mostly due to wanting to avoid market segmentation. The source code was given to Khronos Group to make Vulkam. In AMD proper Mantle lives on as LiquidVR, something VR devs are utilising very heavily.

Though Battlefield 4 still got to benefit from Mantle implementation.

Mantle would have had a shot at replacing openGL if AMD would have allowed third party input, but it specifically stated it would keep the implementation to itself for its own purposes and when Intel asked for the internal driver API AMD refused to provide it until "it was ready", 6 months that went on for before it finally died. All AMD had to do was say that it would be opened up to standards and that they weren't the sole driver of the API and it would likely have succeeded but it was their intent to keep it propriety and have all the control over the API, something no competitor could ever buy into using as it gave AMD the ability to completely destroy their performance in a single update. In the end what happened with Vulkan is exactly this, but it took the technology being utterly killed by DX12 providing that mechanism of a fair competitive platform for all companies involved to finally get AMD to give it up for standardization and that was a full year later than it needed to happen.

 

A good technology hampered by AMDs vision of controlling everything, died its death and inspired DX12 and Vulkan.
