That first build will not survive in terms of running newer games. The second build will even have trouble even with the mighty G3258. For these budget builds, I always recommend an AMD CPU solely because of the fact that newer titles like GTA V and FarCry 4 won't even start without at least 4 cores.

This build is a maybe a few dollars over your budget but will not have a hard time keeping up with newer games and has a lot of room for upgrades!

if you are on a hard budget, go the amd path, you simply get more for your money there. also newer games especially with DX12 give amd cpus a huge blast.

There is no game that needs 4 core, they need 4 threads, which is different. An i3, despite being dual core, can run Far Cry 4, for example.

But I agree with you, the g3258 is only 2 core/2 threads

No, not really. Just get an aftermarket cooler with it like the tx3.

Similar to what he said but you are not going to hit what Linus calls the "sweet spot". You would be better off saving up a little bit more!

there is no such thing called sweet spot... the sweet spot, if exists, is about 1200-1500$ or even up to 2000$, its there, where you get the most for your money, but you are not going nutsy 2011-3 128gb RAM 980ti SLI stuff.

he wants to be on a budget and 500$ is enough to play almost every game at full HD, maybe not on ultra graphics, but on medium to high for sure

That is my error, you are correct in the thread/core discrepancy.
