Are most headsets running off HDMI? I have never held or owned one so does it plug directly into the GPU?

The Rift and the Vive are both using HDMI 1.3. So yes they would normally plug into the GPU. The Rift also requires three USB 3.0 ports. One is for the camera. The other two are for something else, possibly power and motion data.

If I'm guessing correctly. the front 5.25" front VR panel has a HDMI and USB 3. The HDMI plug directly to the internal HDMI port that's on the card and the USB plugs into the internal USB 3 header that's on the motherboard. So for non VR editions, those without that 5.25" drive. The VR headset plugs the HDMI that's on the back of the gpu and USB goes to the USB 3 ports on the back of the motherboard. That means you'll loose the option to run a HDMI screen, unless you opt for a DP to HDMI adapter and 2 less USB 3 ports. Not good when the board you have, only have 2 of them.

It's $4 extra than the bone stock EVGA 980Ti on Amazon. You may as well.

Even if it was $50 extra you're spending upwards of $800 on a headset, and chances are you're also upgrading your GPU so thats like $1500 all up... at that point +/- $50 isn't really an issue.
