State of DX12 on my 390x (Failure as of now)

afyeung

Long story short, going from DX11 to DX12 in ROTR dropped my FPS from 45.64- 44.44 FPS. You might think this is within margin of error, but note I was also using the Reshade AA in DX11 which is disabled in DX12, so my DX11 performance was better on an AMD card... shocker. This was at 1440p Max settings with AA disabled in DX12 and Reshade AA in DX11. I saw the same thing happen with the 980ti, so it's affecting both Nvidia and AMD. I get DX12 is still in its infancy, but it's really discouraging to enable it especially if you take advantage of stuff that works with DX11 like Reshade, mods, and overlays. Hopefully this will get better as time passes.

Remember the games have to be optimized for Direct X 12 before you will see any performance increase at all.

What is  ROTR? All I get when I google is some nintendo DS game. If you are emulating something DX12 is not going to be an increase. May as well try openGL to see if you get an increase.

Rise of the tomb raider, it just got dx12 support

ah, lol.

@afyeung

Tomb raider is almost completely GPU bound, and the 'bonus' to DX12 is because there is less cpu overhead needed than on DX11. What happens when you don't need cpu overhead? You end up with very similar results for DX11 and 12 benchmarks. DX12 is really only going to show improvement in CPU bound scenarios, like the ashes of singularity, because it is an RTS.

So it would be expected that tomb raider would have minimal if any differences, and any loss of fps you experience is down to optimization needing to be tweaked.

I'm not not sure if the DX 12 patch is supported by the latest AMD driver....

keep an eye out for an hotfix for it next week.
