Sandisk X400 missing 36GB

this is normal. that extra space is used for wear leveling, firmware, and for swapping in when you have uncorrectable sectors.

you have 512 GB of space, you just can't use it all right now, and it's to increase reliability dramatically.

So I've upgraded to a Sandisk X400 512GB SSD recently and i've noticed that the capacity is a bit weird.

It's advertised as 512GB, but after format and everything, I only have 476GB usable.
I know there's the 500mb system reserved, and that a formatted drive has less capacity than advertised, but isn't 36GB missing a bit too much?
and when i check it in device manager, it's reporting the drive as 488GB. whereas disk management reports it as 476GB (there's a 13GB delta??)

Basically i'm asking if this is normal, since it's my first time using an SSD, I want to make sure I didn't get a defect product.
and if someone can explain where the 36GB went, that'd be great.

Windows uses GibiBytes which is smaller than GigaBytes which is why a 1TB hard drive is 932 Gb or something.

Samsung 250GB 850 EVO is actually 236GB. It's normal

not Windows, Windows reports the space correctly in GigaBytes

the HW manufacturers use some other measuring unit to mask the actual size of the disk

 

there are too many goddamn standards: JEDEC's, IEC's, SI ... it makes your head explode

this is how I learned it, and I will stick with it:

  • 8 bits = 1 byte
  • 1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte
  • 1024 kilobytes = 1 megabyte
  • 1024 megabytes = 1 gigabyte
  • and so on...
