youre running a 32-bit operating system. they can only utilize 2.97gb, reinstall with a 64 bit and all 4 will be usable

Hey guys. I just installed my pc a 4Gb ram stick but it is only using 2.97Gb. I would like to know what can I do to use the full 4Gb? 

 

System Specs: 

 

•Mobo: Biostar N68S3B 

 

•Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 3.00Ghz

 

•Memory: 4Gb DDR3 1333Mhz

 

•HDD: 320 Gb 7200 rpm.

 

System type: 32-bit Operating System.

Installed physical memory (RAM): 4Gb.

Total physical memory: 2.97Gb.

Available physical memory: 1.45Gb.

Format it as NTFS I think (its been a while)

You'll need 64-bit OS. 32-bit OS only uses 3-3.5GB

Well just like hard drive the memory themselves take up space that is why on a 3TB hard drive you will get about 200gbs short of that. But you should only have like .10 off for memory

The usable ram is all dependent on what hardware you got, but yeah if you want the full 4gigs, a 64bit OS is needed.

youre running a 32-bit operating system. they can only utilize 2.97gb, reinstall with a 64 bit and all 4 will be usable

You will be unable to use all 4GB using Windows XP - the closest you can come is ~3.5GB. However, that's plenty for XP. If you want to use all 4GB of RAM, then upgrade to a 64-bit OS like Windows 7 64-bit.

Sorry lol. Ive read about this issue elsewhere a few days or so ago, think I recommended a memory mapping option in the bios. That is ofc assuming you have a 64 bit OS installed

Check the BIOS if the VRAM is set to more than 128MB or 256MB.

 

32 bit OS can only use 3.47GB unless it's PAE then it can do as much as a 64 bit OS but unless your running something like Windows server this doesn't really apply to you and you'll want a 64 bit OS.

Then why when I go to memory it says 16gb installed 15.9 usable

You're using an i5? probably that's the VRAM that the iGPU is using, would be my first guess. If it was as you suspected, then the difference would be higher, as it would conform to the same mathematics that determine how much free space a HDD has.

 

16 GB = 14.901161193847656 GiB (Rounded to 14.9GB), which is an extra ~100MB more than you've lost. Most likely, your iGPU is simply using 128MB of RAM.

32 bit OS can only use 3.47GB unless it's PAE then it can do as much as a 64 bit OS but unless your running something like Windows server this doesn't really apply to you and you'll want a 64 bit OS.

Kind of amusing that Microsoft nailed PAE years ago, so the 32-bit 4GB limitation is artificially software limited, in an effort to get users to upgrade to 64-bit.

 

Of course, I'm okay with that practice, since the advantages of 64-bit OS far outweigh the annoyance of such a limitation.
