R9-290 runs hot in my Node 202

drmelvin

I'm currently using a Fractal Design Node 202 ITX case along with an AMD R9-290 Gigabyte WindForce.
On Idle i'm averaging at 65C. It's really bad... Playing non-graphic intensive games like CS-GO the GPU will heat up till 94C. Room temp 28C. It's so loud with the fans ramming up to 75%
Anyone using the same case & GPU as me? Do i really need a reference design GPU for this case?

You put a hot GPU with a bad cooler in a case with no airflow.

Make sure you're giving the case plenty of airflow. Maybe try using Afterburner and setting a really aggressive fan curve (just put fans at 100% all the time and check temps?). Otherwise you just didn't plan all that well, the 390 is a hot card on its own

I have a 120mm XSPC fan to exhaust the hot air out of the GPU compartment but no difference. I can always resale this card as I got it cheap for US170. Any other card with the same caliber will run cooler/quiet in the node? The GTX970 seems to be the one however for the same performance I'm paying almost 100 USD more than the R9.

Nono, just buy another case which someone can recommend to you with an ITX build

I would recommend adding fans in the GPU area, you have 2 120mm. Use them, see if they make a difference, if not. Get a new case.

28C is pretty high as a room temperature

Well I live on the equator. It can go as high as 32C on a hot day.

that can make a difference, coupled with a hot card and a small case that could be the cause of your woes. If it always ran like that the card is probably fine

That's what happens when you put an almost 300w TDP card in that sort of case. I think you could try undervolting and that might help a bit.

I've seen build log on YouTube, people put a R9-Nano without a problem. Oh well... I'll source for a less powerful card for now & wait for 980 price to drop.

R9 Nano takes up a lot less space and has a much lower TDP. Sorry that the 290 didn't work out well because it really is a very capable card. But the reality is most OEM's didn't do a good job in the cooling department. 980 or 970 might work out better or if the Nano is cheaper in your area that will work out well too.

It's not bad choices imo. Just bad graphic card. Sold my R9-290 today. Will stick to a 7850 until I can find a more efficient card at a similar price point.

980 Price to drop? Neh. That hardly happens in Singapore. Minimal airflow doesn't really work well when you live near the equator. And nvidia cards are so badly overpriced in Singapore that going with a powerful SFF machine comes with a price premium.

2nd tier 970s are pretty cheap. The Mini Zotac one is under $500.

Well, got a Sapphire Dual X 7850 2GB today for 50USD. Overclock the hell out of it 1200MHz on the core & set the fan profile to max 65%. Result, an impressive 78C on load.
A temporary solution for now, as 1440p gaming is not gonna cut it on this GPU.

You've got 2 120mm fan slots in front of the GPU area in that case. Try running 2 120mm fans there blowing on the card (as intakes). As you described, you have 1 120mm fan there acting as exhaust which is actually fighting against the fans on the GPU which isn't really going to help temps at all. ;)
