It did post after i tried putting it on 4.6ghz so i guess it's pretty high though haven't checked how stable it was

I only mentioned it because you seem to think the cooler has something to do with ruining the CPU.  CPU's have safety protocols for high temps.  The Hyper 212 will give you just as high an OC as your X61 most of the time, it will just be 10-15 degrees hotter.

 

Sustained high voltage can damage a CPU.

I'm fully aware that you wont ruin the cpu with a 212 evo. Yes, I know about the temp protocols, i would just rather it never have to get there.

I`ve done it myself and had a 1 degree difference, which is close to none and have seen numorous comparisons where there was also NO difference.

So you may have been very lucky or did something wrong

to game or not to game, that`s the question

In that case, it would be better to get a better cooler than get an extra fan.

This PC is super old and adding any sort of cooling made it better. But I think it's the orientation and my fan setup that did it. Plus it's doing a push pull setup with some BA fans.
