Breakthrough enables downloads 50,000 times faster than 'superfast' broadband.

Not sure if this has been posted..

But here it goes.

Original Article I first stumbled upon:

"At a blistering 1.125 terabytes per second, a new optical communication system developed by University College London (UCL) researchers has created a new record for the fastest ever data transfer rate for digital information. At the quoted rate, say the researchers, the entire HD series of the TV show Game of Thrones could be downloaded in less than one second. "

Quote

"While current state-of-the-art commercial optical transmission systems are capable of receiving single channel data rates of up to 100 gigabits per second (or 100,000Mbps ), we are working with sophisticated equipment in our lab to design the next generation core networking and communications systems that can handle data signals at rates in excess of 1Tbps," said the project's lead researcher Dr Robert Maher.

I'm currently on a 0.25Kbps Download speed in Australia... And I could only dream for such a connection. :(

PS: If this does get featured in the WAN show, My name is pronounced "Mick-Mole" :)

Have a good one guys.

On 5mbps Internet here. 1.1TBps? Yes please. What do I throw my money at?

You know what's easier than buying and building a brand new PC? Petty larceny!
If you're worried about getting caught, here's a trick: Only steal one part at a time. Plenty of people will call the cops because somebody stole their computer -- nobody calls the cops because they're "pretty sure the dirty-bathrobe guy from next door jacked my heat sink."

Unless I'm missing something here, faster speeds have been achieved including 255 terabit/s (32 terabytes/s).

Edit: also, the articles say 1 terabit per second, not terabyte. Huge difference.

Yeah and all of this tech is useless while current ISPs are basically not accountable for their gross mismanagement of infrastructure upgrades. Why do we still have data caps proves this: they will never allow shit like this to come down to consumers since their price structure and profit margins will be obsolete.

1Tbps sure is sick, we'll surely have evolved faster storage by then anyway.

I'm still waiting for my ISPs to expand fiber connection so I may get some reasonably affordable package.

If optical medium required is new

IDK but light is light, not sure what other sort of medium there would be other than air & vacuum.

The UCL team used 15 super-fast optical fibre channels and a single receiver. However they applied coding techniques commonly used to compress signals over Wi-Fi, but not yet widely used in fibre communications.

So a thinker trunk + tricks.  Hardware to keep up with that speed across geographically large ISPs networks would be something else, nvm the internet as a whole.

Correction... That's what you'd need to pay for it in the Western world. Will be standard in Japan and Korea in a year.

You forgot the months of congressional hearings to try and prevent anyone from using it, as well as the obligatory blowjob for the technician if and when he shows up, which of course won't be on time.
