its a drop down menu in the bios, its not editing it, your just choosing the version, just like you can use and older gpu driver. also none of the bios's were ever offical in house made bios's and they are not from a dodgey source either. they were made by the overclocking community for us to oc locked chips. most of the guys who help put them together work for motherboard manufactures.

you must be a CPU architecture engineer then right?

could you share with the rest of the world how to overclock skylake non-k CPUs after the update then?

1 hour ago, Enderman said:

all the motherboards that are being shipped and sold now have the new BIOS

so for someone LIKE OP building a new PC from scratch, the motherboard will not allow overclocking

It's not hard to find the old BIOS online, a simple asking around on hwbot forums or OCN should easily get you the BIOS.

I severely doubt they're pulling all motherboards from retailers and updating the BIOS, the BIOS that came with motherboards didn't support the overclocking in the first place, only the supermicro one did.  All other BIOS for OC'ing these CPU's was made after their releases and never shipped already on the board.

Depends on which Asrock board you look at IMO.  The OC Formula isn't anything like the rest of the boards they make, it's the only one Nick Shih helps design, the quality, and attention to detail is MUCH better. The BIOS is improved, the performance of basically all overclocking is improved, and just usability for overclocking is better than other boards I've owned. ( Nick Shih is an extreme overclocker that's been in the game for ages)

you still havent proven how you can "easily edit microcode" and make a bios overclockable on any motherboard

or are you talking about only the asrock motherboard which is no longer coming with that BIOS?

so people who want to overclock non-k CPUs need to buy a crappy asrock motherboard and download a BIOS from an unofficial source (since asrock no longer provides it) and then disable security updates on windows so that it doesnt get blocked with an update?

It's this easy:

Intel can't completely remove OC on non-Skylake because if they did, then turbo boost will not work.

Turbo boost is like OC, since the cpu it running beyond the rated spec.

e.g. 2.4 stock to 3.2 turbo boost, the bclk or multiplier will sure go up in order for the cpu to go up to 3.2GHz.

IMO I'm guessing this microcode update basically, brings down the non-K oc back to where it was originally, like 103-105MHz bclk.

Too bad I don't have a skylake to play with...

It is supported and ment for oc. As other have shown you can oc non k but with k you are going safe way and wont encounter any issues.

So might as well get 6600k if you have z170 board.

If you feel confident about your tech skills you can go non k.
