The 290X would get you by until next-gen cards release, 970 SLI is simply a dumb idea and if you're not satisfied with what R9 Fury brings then go for the 290X Tri-X route + cash
290X Crossfire is theoretically a better idea than 970 SLI because of better VRAM, better Xfire scaling and 290X being a tad faster than a 970 in general, but you get heat issues, big power draw and issues typical for Crossfire/SLI setups.

A 980Ti is a good choice, but if it's not an option (and from what I've concluded from your responses it's not) get the 290X and wait for next-gen.

A 290X is a great card that can run anything you throw at it atm. I just finished playing Rise of the Tomb Raider and my R9 290X absolutely nailed it @1200p

go ahead then, if you're really not happy with the fury what do you have to loose?...worst scenario you get the same stuttering (most likely a bit worse since the card is even less powerful) and you get about 15 to 20% less FPS in games.

Cant find a trade for a GTX 980?! those perform about the same, they both have 4GB frame buffer...nvidia is more consistent.

No, I can't. Also, stop with the NVIDIA fanboying, it's getting in my nerves. When was the last time you used AMD? A less powerful card doesn't mean more or the same stuttering. Architecture is different.

Just look at these videos and notice the absolutely horrendous frametime spikes AKA microstuttering with all AMD cards:

FCAT doesn't lie. If more sites did FCAT tests and did it more often we would have more evidence. Too bad they don't. But most people don't even know what frame time is and how to interpret it.

pcperspective have in depth review for frame-time variances on GPU's since 2013...they tested the r9 290/290X/390/390X/Fury/FuryX and it's all the same stuff.

THE 290 series does stutter.

In most cases WORSE than Nvidia cards, it showed stuttering in the video that app4that posted!

actually i had an HD7950 (later re-branded as R9 280) which is guess what: GCN architecture...AMD build on this GPU architecture since early 2012...and it was all a lot more of the same.

It's not fanboying... Nvidia cards are in many cases less powerful for the money than AMD cards. AMD cards tend to be a better value.

BUT AMD has historically had more problems with microstutter and the still do.

no, try to find a GTX 980 or stick to what you have if you can't get a 980ti.

what you have right now is ''the next best thing'' and an R9 290X is certainly not an improvement over the Fury.

Why not RMA the Fury? Stuttering on a single GPU doesn't seem to be anywhere near normal. Used the 280x and the 390x. Only time I have stutters is when there are +50 peeps on in mmos. Other than that, its pretty non existent.

Is the 290x guaranteed to overclock like a beast?

he said his gaming experience was not the butter smooth experience he was promised with the Fury...i fail to see why the 290X would be any meaningful improvement to this since at the heart those GPU's are based on the exact same architecture (graphics core next, GCN) and they use the exact same driver set.

I'd say this then:
IF a 980Ti is out of the picture because of its hefty price tag, Fury X not being really worth it, Fury also out of the question because OP hates it
GTX 980 perf per dollar being pretty bad, GTX 970 not really worth it as well, 390X too expensive for what it brings, OP is left with a 390 or a 290X, if he got an offer that he trades his R9 Fury for a 290X (Sapphire Tri-X, great version) and gets cash in addition to that, he can just get by with that 290X until next-gen releases because it's still an amazing card :)

That article was to Explain what microstutter is and give examples of what you say you DON'T WANT

AMD still has microstutter issues that are worse than Nvidia but have improved greatly compared to 5 years ago.

You want less microstutter

You won't get rid of it completely, ever

if you want to reduce the amount of microstutter that you are experiencing:

get the most powerful Single Nvidia card that you can afford

play games that are more than 6 months old so the drivers are highly optimized

use a monitor that is an easy to drive resolution (1080p)

i'm sure he can find someone willing to trade a GTX 980 for his R9 Fury.

ohh trust me a GTX 980ti hooked to a Gsync monitor is 100% micro-stutter free...i'm super susceptible to micro-stuttering (been doing PC gaming for over 20 years now) and with that it's entirely gone unless you render at settings that are too high for a 980ti which does not happen often at 1440p.

My games are liquid smooth across the board.

But would it really be worth it? A 980 should be slower than a Fury... My 290X after a good OC surpassed a stock 980 score in userbenchmark test by 4%, considering he can get a 290X and 250$(? not sure but he said somewhere around that IIRC)

I mean how much a 980 is faster than a 290X? 10%? Unless you meant a GTX 980 + cash for the Fury, he won't get a better deal than he already got from the 290X dude imo...

have you placed an add yourself asking specifically for someone willing to trade a GTX 980 for a R9 Fury?

technicaly the Fury perform slightly better (in terms of AVERAGE FPS of course) in some games...there has got to be someone out there who like to try new things willing to take the plunge on an high-end AMD card with HBM.

These guys are arguing frametime. Honestly, I don't care if it's everywhere as long as I don't see a shit ton of stutters. What's your experience with stutter? Witcher 3? Fallout 4?

it's not about AVERAGE framerates as you can see in this thread for most people MINIMUM FPS and FRAME-TIME variances are more important than a few more peak FPS here and there...it's about a good consistent butter smooth gaming experience...and in that regard a single GTX 980 is head and shoulders above any AMD card.
