So I didn't plan on upgrading until the next series of GPUs came out but I've got no choice but to now. So I'm hoping my 780 ti is still good until I can upgrade it.

So can someone tell me if I have any incompatibility that I'm not noticing? Yes I know that I'm not getting the cheapest blah blah blah.  I want premium parts.  The only thing I'm really flexible on is should I switch to x99 or not?

2 to 3 thousand, US. For the full build. Tower cost only.

Get an Asus Maximus VIII Extreme, a noctua NH-D15 (the thing is an air cooler and wipes the floor with most watter coolers), and a 750T from Corsair

I'm inclined to tell you that if you're going for a SLI build, you'll be better off with a 5820K instead.

here you go, something quick. you can choose storage and rest of stuff. Though x99 is something i would recommend in that price range

These would be my picks based on your criteria. PSU depends on gpu choice. An 850W G2 is fine for two GTX 980 Ti.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Because even if he's only gaming, it's better to choose a higher-end platform with a more powerful CPU for essentialy the same price?

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

I'll admit that I am torn on possibly x99. I'm just not sure how much I'd benefit from it. Mostly gaming but I  was looking somewhat into more professional uses... Isn't a new extreme just around the corner though?

The new Broadwell-E platform will use the X99 motherboard. I guess you could go 5820K and upgrade later... But I'm expecting to see a very minimal improvement between the two. So you could do that or wait for a bit and buy all your parts at once.

For professional use, I'd recommend a hexacore 5820K over the quad core 6700K any day, especially in programming, rendering and editing etc.

If you overclock the 5820K, you'll see very similar performance in gaming in comparison to the 6700K OC, and even better performance if you're going for a SLI build (so I don't see why just want one 980Ti for a $3000 PC).

Say I wanted to in the future upgrade to the latest Nvidia card,  whatever it's going to be called. If I were considering SLI would I be better with X99?

Would SLI be necessary to max 1440p 144hz?

Edit thanks everyone. Just ordered everything.
