Custom Pc's in Schools

It's all about support and warranty. A school won't have dedicated personnel for dealing hardware issues on large numbers of PCs. You need to offload that to someone and best way is where you got those computers.

One method we got is we are given the purpose of the PCs, we give out hardware specifications like what processors are on the minimum, GPU, HDD, etc and a third party assembles those and we just buy those from them in bulk. All the support goes through them so we focus on little things like network configuration, etc while hardware defects gets reported and replaced ASAP.

The ones we put Firepro or Radeon GPUs into, yes. Otherwise, no, they're general use machines which students use in the suites or office machines for staff.

It works for us, we don't really ever suffer any failures (I've been here just over 18 months so have built approximately 300 PCs by this point).

If it were a lot cheaper and "better" to go for prebuilt machines, it's what we'd be told to do by the boss' boss. We get 5 years out of each PC which is rolled out to a staff member or classroom seat. Leasing really is not as cheap as it sometimes sounds - once we buy our components, they are ours and we can replace parts without waiting for a technician to visit instead of us voiding the warranty and shoehorning a standard component in place of a proprietary one, in the case of some PSUs and motherboards.

Like I said, it works perfectly for us where we have a team of 6 supporting all the hardware. In a school where you will have far less PCs and the work is not as important, it probably does make more sense to go for a lease system where the hardware is supported by the vendor.

When you buy in large quantities from OEMs like Dell or HP, the cost per machine goes down, much lower than the amount you might save by buying a custom machine.

At my high school, all we did with computers is research, writing papers and screwing around. So pentium 4 and 1 gb of DDR2 is enough although they did recently get 4th gen i3 with 4 gb of ram.

At my School we have a few duel cores and even some single core pc, we've maxed them out ram wise to 4gb of ddr2 and some ssd's and they're struggling now.

Let's see, the second option for my secondary school had a gaming club...which meant they had 30 gaming computers with i5 sandy bridge and 660ti or 670s...but the one I go to has an ass load of original ipads, 2006-2010 macbooks, 2008 iMacs and 20 workstations (in the tech department) with quad core ivy bridge xeons and quadro k1200
