Will laptop makers stop using mobile versions of GPU's?

Do you think that with the current advancements in GPU technology that laptop makers will stop using the mobile versions of GPU's and go with full desktop versions? (Ex. GTX 980 vs GTX 980M)

Many of the gaming laptops that debuted at CES 2016 had full desktop graphics cards so the concept isn't new. 

Am I being too optimistic of the future?

No, the 980 is an anomaly and besides, the laptops that use those are hardly even mobile anymore. They're just slightly more portable than a monitor with a small form factor desktop, and not necessarily lighter.

I do hope they stop using low end dedicated gpus in laptops in favour of integrated graphics.

As GPU efficiency keeps getting better then yes you will see more and more desktop chips being put into laptops

They will most likely have gpus of comparable power to a 980ti eventually. I remember kidding around 5 years ago on the idea a phone could run battlefield 3 - turns out the atom in the zenfone 2 can do it, albeit at a fairly low framerate, and it doesn't even have one of the fastest gpus we've seen in a phone.

Well with a good point of efficiency you can just put a full blown desktop chip in a laptop.. previously you got a cut down one based on the smaller die like the x60 and x60ti desktop gpus.

They will always have to run at lower clocks in laptops, so they should always be named differently even when using the same actual GPU inside. They have always used the same actual GPUs for both laptops and desktops. GK104 was used in both laptops and desktops, so was GF114 and so on.

No, there hasn't really been any issue getting a fully enabled chip in a laptop. The Geforce GTX 580M used a fully enabled GF114 chip. It just ran at lower clocks than in a desktop graphics card.

My bad. I did not mean not fully enabled but a 114/104/204 class chip is cut down chip even if it's a fully enabled die. terminology clash :P

That upcoming Skylake Iris Pro can be the end of mobile GPUs. Intel really learned something from their Xeon Phi here.

By the time phones have a GTX980ti in the the GTX980ti will be the GT710 of yesterday

With what I think I see as a trend toward better efficiency, etc, I could see it happening. :) I'd like to see the day when an i7-????X and Titan (then-current) in max-way SLI are so efficient & cool, they could run in a smartwatch without needing heatsinks and be below 45C under load. (I'm talking about desktop-grade parts of course.)

Otoh, I totally expect 99.99999% of people would not pay $5K *just* for the CPU & GPUs in their watch! :o Maybe we'd have to settle for a mainstream i7-K and GTX ?80 Ti in our phones? (again without needing heatsinks - on a desktop you'd only need a cooling solution if you're significantly overclocking, I hope.)
