Where can I get an r9 290 for 170 lol?

on craigslist and other second hand websites.

A R9 280 new for $170 is on the expensive side.

A R9 280 used for $170 is a scam.

The 960 should be faster than the R9 280, and it also uses less power.

Not necessarily. The 280 is about 20% faster than a 760 at this point in time and a 960 is around 10-15% faster than a 760 so realistically a 280 would be the same or ahead depending on the game

Pretty much equal , but , i would say 960 2GB < 280 < 960 4GB

go for r9 380x, after what I have seen, its the same price as gtx 960, but does better in almost every game.

in benchmarks it often are r9 280 = gtx 960 < r9 280x < r9 380x

r9 390x is basicly the same as rp 280x, just higher clockspeed I think.

Not at all, the R9 390X and the R9 280x are in a whole different ballpark. Look at benchmark FPS differences.

I ment 380x, I wrote it wrong, sorry for that

280x and the 380x are different cards too. The 380x is based off of the 290x if I'm right.

They perform the same they will trade blows from game to game pick which ever is cheaper i would go with the one with more memory so if the GTX 960 is only a 2GB model i would pick the 3gb R9 280 instead but if you can have a 4GB GTX 960 then i would go with that one:

http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-R9-280-vs-Nvidia-GTX-960/2241vs3165

Performance will depend on the game, settings and drivers...most games prefer nvidia and some prefer AMD.

The 960 is noticeably more energy efficient so it will likely run cooler and quieter assuming they have similar cooling solutions, and the 960 support a shit load of cool features that the 280 does not.

the "exstra futures" isnt important. and 280x is more similar price of what I have seen, and its more powerfull than gtx 960.

Just to make it clear to you ALL!!!!

R9 280=hd7950

R9 280x=hd7970

R9 380=Tonga GPU with 1792 stream processors

R9 380x=full tonga GPU with 2048 stream processors

As for my recomendaton...

The GTX 960 is only worth it, if you get the 4GB version and overclock it past 1500MHz on the core and the 128-bit memory Bus is a bottleneck.

As for the r9 280, it has 3GB of VRAM a 384-bit memory Bus and if you get the Gigabyte version, you get the best Core for overclocking and a 1072 MHz out of the box.

If I would buy a GPU for 1080p, I would get the r9 380 4GB and overclock it past 1100MHz on the core.

Idk why you'd compare a 280 to a 960.

Get a 380 or 380X, they're both better than a 960.

Spoiler

This, BUT I stress this every time, despite my love for AMD cards, in a very small case, you are better off with a 960 due to the heat and noise. If that is no issue, get a 380 4GB or the 380X.

ACTUALLY. TinyTomLogan did a review on the 380 from XFX and found it drawing 130W only at stock. The 190W TDP is, as usual, overestimated and thus not even reachable. The difference is 10W. I can link the vid if you want

-snip-

Kinda makes you wonder where other reviews get their numbers from.

Anandtech has their system with the 960 at 225W, while the 380 system is around 295. Forbes 258W vs 332W. GameStar 285W vs 227W. So usually around a 60-70W difference.

I am not saying Tom is wrong, it is just weird and of course I cannot test whoever is right here.
