Comcast's combo router/modem sucks turnip..Help!

dancagley

So I'm sick of the cheapo Comcast all in one router/modem. I have seen from another post that you can turn off the wifi in the combo and use it just as a modem, then buy a standalone router...BUT I want nothing to do with Comcast's crappy hardware. Does anyone have personal experience with a 3rd party router they would recommend? For now, with my level of frustration, price is no object..

I've heard ISPs don't like you using you''re own modems generally, but if you can get a supported modem, i'd encourage you to do that and run PFsense for the router.  Any old PC with some network cards will do.

you can

BUT

as a home customer, in my experience-

Oh, your cable TV is not working?

It's your fault, and we won't service a 3rd party device.

But that's TV and it has nothing to do with

Bye

Shit you not there was a pole down once and they refused my call because of a 3rd party modem once.

(This was back when their modems were so trash a few I had would constantly restart after high throughput )

Needless to say I use theirs these days.

though I assume this is only for residential customers, as many business customers do have their own stuff.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Well if you're going to use a 3rd party one you should at least call them so they won't keep charging you the rental fee for their equipment

If you have phone service then its going to be much harder for you. Now you can buy something like a SB6141 Motorola modem. Its a 8x4 modem. Meaning it can do 8 downstream channels and 4 upstream. Its been rock solid. It was about 80 USD. As for a router I use a oldish N750 from Dlink. It works, a hell of a lot better than the all in one crap boxes Comcast hands out.

If you dont want to replace you modem, then see if Comcast can put it in bridge mode. This is generally something the end user can not do.

Honestly I would say buy your own modem. Save 10 dollars. Thats what my family did. Just make sure you get a DOCSIS 3.0 Modem, Comcast wants DOCSIS 2.0 modems off their network. Then buy a good router.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Yeah I saw this in another post, it is a possibility..but I would rather get rid of Comcast trash and save some money by avoiding the rental fee

ISPs are the absolute worst companies on earth..worse than cell phone companies imo

Thank you! Glad to hear you have solid performance from the modem. I see it has great amazon reviews too!

we have an arris sbg6580 router/modem combo unit that we own, we bought it from walmart after our old sbg6141 crapped the bed (we also owned that one, and it crapped out after like 6 months). its been not very reliable lately, but according to the neighbor, theyve been having issues with internet issues lately as well.

On top of that, there are better modems too. The more downstream channels and upstream channels the modems supports the better speed tiers you can sub to. I would still recommend a separate modem and router.
