Razer Manticor Aluminum Hard-surfaced Mousepad

Hello

This is my review of the Razer Manticor Aluminum Hard-surfaced Mousepad, my first-ever Razer product that I have personally bought for myself after I was introduced to them through my brother with the Razer Onza Xbox 360 FPS Controller (Yes I was a console gamer. Get rekt).

razer-manticor-gallery-5.png

Now this mousepad is not cheap guys. This is a $49.99 USD product and if you're in California, add 8% taxes on top that and that gets you up to $53.99 USD! Ouch. I bought this mouse from Fry's Electronics out of my own pocket. I am not sponsored, nor do I endorse them. I am just like every one of you here; a regular customer.

Specifications

This mouse pad is, of course, made out of a sheet of aircraft-grade aluminum and it's cold to the touch. It is a smooth surface for fast movements across the surface. It measures 10 inches long and 14 inches wide with a rubber sheet underneath to keep it in place. Now I can't tell you how thick the aluminum is since I don't have calipers on hand. And it comes in a robust, sturdy case that is a bitch to open. So Razer really has made sure that this mousepad will stay in pristine condition no matter where you take this to.

What's In the Box

  • Razer Manticor Aluminum Hard-surfaced Mousepad
  • Hardshell Case with the mousepad in there
  • "Fanboyism" Stickers
  • Letter from the Founders

How Is It?

Now what I originally intended was to get a 2-in-1 mousepad from Razer (The Invicta) so I can have either a "Control" surface or a "Speed" surface, depending on what game I was playing. But however, I ended up getting on Manticor on "accident". But the experience of using it is, in fact, not very bad at all considering that Razer has made this mouse pad as a "Speed surface", but after some time getting familiar with the surface, I can still exert some level of fineness on this mouse pad. The mouse I am currently using is the Asus ROG GX850 mouse when I did this review (I will be upgrading to the Logitech G502 Proteus Core very soon). I was struggling trying to decide on the SteelSeries 9HD mousepad or a Razer hard-surface mouse pad. This Razer product, contrasting against the hate on the forums about them, is fantastic. I felt like in the end, I got my money's worth out of this hefty investment, and will surely last me a long time.

Pros

  • Very durable
  • Hardshell case it comes in is robust and sturdy
  • Large enough for someone like me
  • Smooth enough for this to be considered a "Speed" surface with the mouse at the time of this review

Cons

  • The hardshell case is a bitch to open. I have to open it up from the middle of the front.
  • Price ($49.99 USD)

The Bottom Line

Even though I have seen a lot of hate on the quality of Razer's products, this one is a no-brainer to me. Yes you are paying a lot for this mouse pad, however it is worth it at the end of the day. The quality is top-notch as well. For those of you looking for a "speed" hard-surfaced mouse pad, you may want to consider this mouse pad.

First impressions are important. But as far as quality will it break/tear in a month? thats most peoples concerns when it comes to razer products.

I'd love to see long term review/updates :)

True, but if everything was reviewed like that, we still wouldn't know that the 970 has vram issues :D

Yeah I will post a follow-up review after six months or so. We will see how this Razer product stands the test :)

Well good then :)  I don't have to comment back; you're looking at this the same way I am.

So, no need to complain about a review not having content that we all know will take years to know - better to have it out now with what can be talked about right away.

the fact that you think OP owning this thing for a few days validates his claims that it is "very durable" and "will stay in pristine condition no matter where you take this to"

I wasn't defending any claims about long term quality, I was saying that you can't complain about not having good historical data to support the claims because of course we don't have those details yet - he hasn't had the product for 2 years yet.  We have to just take that as first impressions.

you were wrong

it does have that content

and clearly OP has not had the product for long, so they are false statements

is this so hard for you to accept?

you said the review didnt have that content about quality and durability

In the context that it does not have content about durability backed by years of use.  Which it doesn't.  (Which is why you complained about it to begin with, yes?)

Not everything you read is going to be perfect.  Sometimes you'll have to look at something and say "they're talking about long term durability when they couldn't possibly know that yet.  I think I'll just take this as a first impression despite how it's written"

i was pointing out exactly how the OP claimed that it will stay in pristine condition and that it will last a long time without actually having used it for more than a few days and therefore his claims are false

I don't see why you are even trying to argue with that

for some reason you keep replying stating the obvious as if i dont know that already

if you want to up your post count by making useless arguments, go do that with someone else

I'm not trying to argue that you can't talk long term durability without years with the product first.  I just had an issue with the wording (maybe I misinterpreted what you were getting at)

You can't say anything about quality from having owned it 3 days

Come back here in 2-3 years to tell us how it broke or wore out

See, you can talk about quality right away, just only to the extent of what it feels like.  By the way you worded this it seemed to me like you were saying don't bother trying to evaluate it until you've had it for 3 years.  That's all I had an issue with.  First impressions of it are still useful to know right away, especially if it means we don't have to wait so long that the product goes out of production before we get the review.

Just my 2 cents I have owned this as well as a Razer Onza as well for almost 2 years now and while the Onza was a mistake as it broke with little use and no abuse (tiny dip switches not rubber domes... way to see what all 3 large companies use in bullet proof designs and decide to use button that broke with little use in vcrs...)

my experience of the mouse pad is the only razor product that doesnt look like its part of a "my first goth gaming kit" and in approx 2 years of use looks flawless... as for its case... its land-filler, cant open it without a fight and who travels with a hard mouse pad and if you did you could simply set it ontop of your laptop and slide into its case or on the side of your tower (rubber bottom would not mar the surface it touches) and move it like that...

Fun side note... The onza case is awesome for traveling with a ps3 ps4 xbox 360 xbone or steam controller plus extra wires... so to sum up Matacore great product terrible case Onza terrible product great case...
