Looking to make the jump from console gaming to PC, Need help!

Hi there. First off I just want to say that I am completely inept when it comes to computer details and one of the major reasons I signed up to the forum is so that I can learn more. That being said I recently came into possession of an older PC and I am wondering if its worth upgrading or if I should just start off from scratch? I'm looking to play Battlefield 4 on graphic settings on par or preferably above next gen consoles. I've asked a couple other people online about this PC and I've gotten conflicting responses. One person said that I should buy an XFX Radeon HD 7850 1GB Video Card, A new 500W power supply and Windows 8 and that with this I would be able to run games on medium settings. Another person I asked said that my processor is too old and that my motherboard cant support new processors.

The computer in question is a Dell XPS 630. The stats are: Q9300, 2.5,6 MB, Vista, Crossfire, Memory Module, 6G, 2X2G/2X1G, 800 CM633/ HARD DRIVE, 640 GB, 3870 GPU

If you believe this computer is unsalvageable, would it be possible to build a decent gaming PC for around 600$?

$600 is plenty enough. It'd be better to build a new pc.

A 7850/7870 would be on par with the new consoles.

Do you need a copy of Windows? $600 USD, CAD, or what?

It would all be in CAD, and yeah I would need a copy of windows.

Is this too expensive? http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/1zo9l

Could just salvage his old HDD and do the rest of this build.

Right.

Could just skip the hdd, keep the old one, and save up the rest of the money for a ssd.

No that's right around my price range, what kind of life span would a computer like that have? Easy to upgrade in the future?

It depends on how long you want to have it. How long until you want better graphics++.

For me it takes 2+ years until i switch components or add more^^

Also, i would go for Windows 7 anyday when it comes to gaming. Windows 8 is basically a tablet OS :/

It's not too upgradable but would last a while.

You can use your old hdd. Add a ssd later when you can. Crossfire ready so you can just add another 7870 later down the road for an easy upgrade.

Sounds good. Now when it comes to installing all these parts, is it fairly simple? I know I'll youtube it when the time comes but just wondering.

These are very clear and show close ups of every part of the build process. It's as easy as putting the thing in the thing.

To be honest it's actually really easy, the only problem that i had when i made my first computer was the front-panel connectors, but all you have to do is read the manual that follows the Motherboard.

Good luck, it should be fairly easy :)

Basically a general question for everyone, is there ever a "best" time to buy computer parts? Are their more sales around Christmas/boxing day?

To answer your question is yes you do usually find better deals around the holidays but sometimes you find them inbetween

Over here in South Africa prices drop like crazy (sometimes up to 30%) during the Christmas holidays.

The Specs WoodenMarker posted here are basically all you need in one convenient cost effective package, I'd definitely recommend it.

I'd just add an SSD as he also recommended.
