The xeon, because of Hyperthreading.Many new games benefit from it.

Also,you dont need a Z97 board for the xeon, so maybe it will be cheaper than the 6500+b150 combo

Well, the main downside to a Xeon is that they cannot be overclocked, but as you are comparing to a locked CPU, there is little competition. 

 

For a locked gaming build, the I5 4460 is the most cost effective choice, performing as well as the other options.

 

For unlocked, 6600k or 4690k. 

 

Also, why have you specified the Z97 chipset for the Xeon? I was under the impression that they have special chipsets.

Since you won't be over clocking it really doesn't matter. The way I would do it is:

1) use a site like pcpartpicker where you can compare components and prices

2) enter the features you need (number of dimm slots, pci slots, sli/crossfire support etc)

3) sort for lowest price

4) go from top to bottom and check for every motherboard on the vendors website whether it supports your CPU (some motherboards don't support some CPUs, even though the socket is the same).

Then you pick the first one which has the features you need and supports your CPU. This can easily save you $50 over buying a z97.

Which mobo do you recommend?

ASRock H97 ATX (or M for micro-ATX) I just bought one it's a no frills motherboard that works and cost $80 with 4 dimm slots.  Seems like a good value solution.

E3-1230 v5 do you mean? I my country (Germany) is a lot more expensive, and I need to buy DDR4, and more expensive mobo, does it still compensates?

I'd get the i5-6500 and an AsRock or MSI Z170 board, and overclock it. Might as well get fast DDR4 (e.g., DDR4-2666 or better) while you're at it.

 

EDIT: Nah, I think I'd probably get the 1231v3 on second thought. Games are often 8 core aware now and who knows how long Intel will let you overclcok non K cpus? Though if you're the type who likes to upgrade a lot then the i5-6500 + Z170 + DDR4 option is way better since you can later upgrade to an unlocked Kaby Lake or Cannonlake processor, assuming those don't fail like Broadwell.

Though the 1231v3 is awesome (it's what I'm running). Z97 is useful for running overclocked RAM which often helps out a lot for minimum framerates or any other time you're cpu bound. Otherwise though my E3-1231v3 ran just as well on my $50 Gigabyte H81 board as it does on my $120 MSI Z97 board.

Yeah I mean the 1230 v5. They will only work on server chipsets. I think MSI or Asus has motherboards for them. DDR4 is not much over DDR3, about $15 in price difference. But I'm not sure how big of a price gap it is in Germany.
