Well I am now in First Robotics and I am head of programming. I have only done HTML basics. We can use java, lab view or C++ and I feel like C++ will benefit me more so I am going with that. I am using codeblocks for the compiler and after that well I don't really know anything. I hope I can learn enough in time. Is C++ hard to learn? What can I do with it? Any tips?

Just keeping this here as a C++ isn't recommended as a first language, try Python, then C#/Java and C++ after that.

Well I am now in First Robotics and I am head of programming. I have only done HTML basics. We can use java, lab view or C++ and I feel like C++ will benefit me more so I am going with that. I am using codeblocks for the compiler and after that well I don't really know anything. I hope I can learn enough in time. Is C++ hard to learn? What can I do with it? Any tips?

you can do alot with C++, but it's considered difficult to learn. 

you'll be able to do EVERYTHING with C++ but it's very technical, you need to learn how to manage your memory manually. learn about array positioning to avoid accessing memory you didn't allocate, off by one errors are the most common thing. 

 

HTML is the easiest language by far. python is easy to learn too. 

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

you can do alot with C++, but it's considered difficult to learn. 

you'll be able to do EVERYTHING with C++ but it's very technical, you need to learn how to manage your memory manually. learn about array positioning to avoid accessing memory you didn't allocate, off by one errors are the most common thing. 

 

HTML is the easiest language by far. python is easy to learn too.

You have 3 officially supported languages FIRST Robotics (there are user made bindings for things like .NET but I  have never looked into them). You have Java, C++ and LabVIEW. My team uses C++. For basic robot operations its very easy to use. Its only 'difficult' when you start get into more complex things like vision but there is many utilities and helpers that are part of the WPI Library for vision. Really its pretty much pick a language and go with it. LabVIEW is a graphical programming language BTW.

 

Edit: I was able to teach the programmers on my team C++ in a weeks worth of time. You should have no problem learning C++.

For robotics C++ is probably the best way to go, although the language is more complex and difficult to learn than Java.

oh, so there was some truth to it. The guy who programs for the team is a real ass%$ normally. And always complains how hard everything was. 

I wouldn't call it difficult per se but its definitely not a good language in my books. My first year mentoring my team tried LabVIEW and we had some of the updates break our entire code base for it. It also took a lot more time to figure things out compared to a language like C++ where you can just look at a header file and be on your way.

In a school learning environment, the correct behavior and attitude is far more important than the success of a project. You can't have part of your team be unreliable. Not only is he unreliable, he's unreliable for the wrong reasons: temper and a selfish desire to take advantage of your reliance on him to feel important.

 

I think you should try to get a bunch of people (the entire team?) to talk with him, try to convince him to be a team player. And you should ask him if he has any problems with you guys, too. But if that doesn't work, then imo he has no place on a team. Maybe in a professional environment you have to make do temporarily with a loose cannon, but In a school environment, your projects are far more about the learning experience than the result. So even if you have to scrap the project because you've failed to learn coding quickly enough, you have the perfectly valid excuse of not being able to find an emotionally stable programmer. In the end the decision is your team's call, though.

It's quite low level, and so requires understanding of memory, pointers etc. 

When writing C/C++ it really helps to have an appreciation of how computers and OSes work to some extent. Most other languages abstract it all away to the point of irrelevance to the programmer.

 

I don't think it's necessarily impossible to start out with C++. But it won't be easy.

C is a little easier to comprehend because it doesn't have all the Object Oriented Programming bolted on top.

Use Java, it's the most supported language in FRC With the largest community.

If you'd like, I can send my pre-season code for you to look over :) it's built on the command based robot, so you probably won't want to use it (instead, you should probably use iterative robo), but it will give you a general idea for how stuff works.

c++ is not hard to learn especially if you want to learn. My college uses it as a intro into computer science and overall programing design.

it gives you the flexibility of just importing libraries fit for your task ( robotics in your case) and let you just adapt what other people already figured out or dive down and control things on a very low level to let you get exactly what you want out of your program. 

 

That being said stackoverflow.com and c++.com will be your friend while you are learning and just in general.

Echoing this. I started off learning Python but it wasn't until I started learning C++ that I really got a grasp of what exactly I was doing. Certainly a bit harder but definitely worth it.
