Cinematic Slow Motion Camera

So I currently have a Cannon 7D and was looking for a new camera. My dad wants a 7D Mark II as he shoots pictures and I shoot videos, the auto focus in video is really nice. But I am expanding and I feel like the production quality could be bumped a bit if I do some tasteful slow motion. I am not talking 25,000FPS but more in the ball park of 240-960 at 1080. This video is horrible and I hate sororities but the production value is pretty spiffy, except for GoPro shots those cannot be in high production value video anyways here is the video try to pay attention to the slow motion.

Just keeping this here as a So I currently have a Cannon 7D and was looking for a new camera. My dad wants a 7D Mark II as he shoots pictures and I shoot videos, the auto focus in video is really nice. But I am expanding and I feel like the production quality could be bumped a bit if I do some tasteful slo motion. I am not talking 25,000FPS but more in the ball park of 240-960 at 1080. This video is horrible and I hate sororities but the production value is pretty spiffy, except for GoPro shots those cannot be in high production value video anyways here is the video try to pay attention to the slow motion.

 

Whats your budget? everything i have seen so far that can do more 100+fps at 1080p is $5000 and up for a camera like the sony fs7 and thats only at 180 fps at full hd. A used fs700 might be your best bet. Seems like it can do 240 fps at 1080.

Likely. 

 

I have a Blackmagic URSA that does 120FPS 4K and 150FPS HD which is pretty damn good, and you've got room to slow down in post, with me able to get a simulated 300FPS in my last video fine (but not of a person moving).

 

Is bulky and requires expensive rigging to carry around though, so the FS700 is probably the better option. But most tasteful slow motion can be done at 60-120FPS. 240 is pretty insane.

The FS700 and the new PXW FS5 from Sony can record FHD up to 240fps, however they can only do so buffered.  Even then, the amount of footage that can be recorded in the buffer will depend on codec, bit rate and other factors.

 

The Ursa Mini and PXW FS7 can record unbuffered 120fps and 180fps respectively.

 

The camcorder Sony FDR AX100 can record 1080p 120fps too.  That should be cheaper than buying the Ursas or PXW cameras.  There might be some other camcorders that also record faster than 100fps, however I don't know the specs of every model on the market.

Doesn't look like they are using an FS700, the FS700 is boxy and not easy to hold, especially for the selfie shot in the first few seconds of the video.

 

And judging by the DOF of that other video, Delta something, it also appears to have been recorded with a camcorder that records 60-120fps.

Best bang for buck would probably be a Sony RX10 II which does great 240 in buffered mode or 120 continuous. In addition the RX10 is small enough to be flown on a smaller pistol grip 3-axis gimbal like a Came-TV Single or a Pilot Fly H1 which makes a killer combo. If you want to go further in the 'cinematic' look you could add on a SLR Magic Anamorphot to get a more traditional cine-scope.

So I currently have a Cannon 7D and was looking for a new camera. My dad wants a 7D Mark II as he shoots pictures and I shoot videos, the auto focus in video is really nice. But I am expanding and I feel like the production quality could be bumped a bit if I do some tasteful slow motion. I am not talking 25,000FPS but more in the ball park of 240-960 at 1080. This video is horrible and I hate sororities but the production value is pretty spiffy, except for GoPro shots those cannot be in high production value video anyways here is the video try to pay attention to the slow motion.

Have you shot anything at 60fps and then reinterpreted it? 60fps to 24 or 30fps is nice, and you can digitally slow it down further than 2-2.5x without it looking overly processed (like if you took 24 or 30fps and slowed it down). Honestly, slow motion isn't going to improve your production quality a lot. It looks cool and can be useful for certain situations, but lighting, framing and the basics of cinematography/videography are more important to the look of your videos than time manipulation.

That is different. I am talking like in the hobbit during the barrel scene they used GoPros and it looked horrible. For action stuff the wide angle and fast paced of it takes away any resolution degrade. You also expect it to look like that. Same goes for TV shows like mythbusters and stuff. You don't expect a $10,000 camera to be 10 feet from 100 pounds of C4 or driven off a cliff.

That is different. I am talking like in the hobbit during the barrel scene they used GoPros and it looked horrible. For action stuff the wide angle and fast paced of it takes away any resolution degrade. You also expect it to look like that. Same goes for TV shows like mythbusters and stuff. You don't expect a $10,000 camera to be 10 feet from 100 pounds of C4 or driven off a cliff.

 

Eh, IMO everything in The Hobbit looked horrible. FU HFR. :P

 

Aside from grading to match other cameras, the other issue I have with mixing GoPro footage in is the fisheye. I know what you're getting at, but I don't think using a GoPro instantly lowers the production value; it's all about how it works in the overall video.
