i3 vs i5 (ivy bridge)

Render on Sony Vegas pretty gangsta and doesn't drag ass on games

The 6300 would do better though at the same price.

An i3 and a fx 8320 is basically the same price. Seems like a no brainer to me, you save money and get an 8 core cpu. its not the best and definitely not the worst.

...What?

An i3 is around the price of a 6300, not a 8320.

Its like a £15 difference, thats barely any difference in the price. Its probably a bigger gap in USA. Btw the Fx 8320 isnt on sale as it says, its been that price for like 3 months now.

from a quick pricerunner search the 6300 is about 5% less then the i3, and the 8320 is about 25% more than the i3. In sweden with shipping that is.

guys! i already have the mobo, i will not buy amd for this build! feel free to discuss it, but not here :P seeing how the i5 is almost twice the price i don't see any reason to buy an i5 over an i3, especially not when it will be replaced by my 2600k in a year or two...

Go for the I3, the I5 is basically an I3 for more money.

wat

all the wats

hyper threading isn't equivalent to having physical cores, plus, i3 have locked multipliers

I wonder what mini itx motherboard he's going to be getting for that 6300 then

There isn't a mini itx AM3+ mobo.

Go for the i5 if you can afford it. It's much more powerful than the i3.

Well do you think a 6300 will work in his p8z77?

that's probably his point...

Then it doesn't make sense since I wasn't referring to a cpu for the OP.

I'm just backing up the idea that the i3 is not a good value.

I'm suggesting an example to show that the i3 is a bad value and not as a cpu for the OP.

Stop using pointless rhetorical questions.

It really depends which games you want to be able to run. Some are more cpu intensive, some are more gpu intensive. the i5 is obviously faster, but my advice would be to pick a game you want to be able to run, and then search for benchmarks to see if you can achieve the frame rate you want.

Also as I understand it there are no K versions of i3s. Might be wrong here though.

guys, consider price. an i3 costs roughly 900 NOK, an i5, 1500 NOK. is it really worth it to buy an i5 for a secondary rig which will primarely be used as an htpc/fileserver, and ocasionally bf3 on lans?

Better overall performance and can be overclocked: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i3-3220-vs-AMD-FX-6300

What evens it out is that the i3 has a iGPU and uses less power but if you were using integrated graphics, an APU would be better.

I don't get the second line?

from my experience I can say, switching from i3 to i7, I didn't see any difference in most of my games, those who were running good, they still run good and those who were lagging, they still lag (because of my GPU).
Only difference I saw is render time in 3ds max. So...

| CPU: i7 3770k | MOTHERBOARD: MSI Z77A-G45 Gaming | GPU: GTX 770 | RAM: 16GB G.Skill Trident X | PSU: XFX PRO 1050w | STORAGE: SSD 120GB PQI +  6TB HDD | COOLER: Thermaltake: Water 2.0 | CASE: Cooler Master: HAF 912 Plus |
