whats better? fx 6300 vs athlon 860k

As someone who today just jumped over the Red/Blue fence, I'm inclined to be a dick and say "Intel i5 4460".

 

Though if AMD is a necessity because budget, the Athlon is cheaper and has four cores, which is cheaper than the cheapest Intel offering.

At the same time, however, an Intel Core i3 6100 would be a better value proposition, since it has four threads which work really well in games (on par with the 4460 in some games, in fact), and you have an upgrade path with other Skylake chips, Kaby Lake and potentially Cannonlake.

Both perform the same in modern games as modern games use 8+ cores

Nope 860K has 20% better IPC and is about as good as a FX-4300 at around 4.5GHz/4.6GHz...

but performance wise, both are extremely close when i3 is overclocked with fast ram.

 

2133 DDR4 is super slow and going to 2666 means 5-10 fps more in gta 5. wut

FX 6300 is about on par with the i3 4150 in games that doesnt use all 6 cores.

in games that DOES use all 6 cores, it is almost as good as a i5 4460
