5820k overclock

Linus overclocked this processor with core ratio limit: 45 and cpu core voltage: 1.3. I run a stability test with this settings but it didn't pass and caused a blue screen. Now my setting are core ratio limit: 35 and cpu core voltage: 1.2. This is stable but I've not benefit from this overclock. The cpu frequency is 3.3 GHz. How can I overclock up to 4 GHz? My hardware is: 

-i7 5820k

-asus x99-a/ usb 3.1

-corsair vengeance lpx 16 GB

-evga supernova 650gs power supply

Wow, you'd really have to get shat on to not be able to pass 45x1.3 unless you are running xmp on your ram or something...

 

Anyways try 44, 1.3

 

Check to make sure your bclk clock is 100 btw.

Mine worked great with 45 and 1.3 My heat output was the issue, I was hitting 85C (while folding) and I just wasn't wanting it that high, and I really don't need an overclock. It's amazing how low the temps can be on this chip at stock speeds: 55C When full load, wow. I would like to add, I have an H100i, just to give you some more information on my cooling. Not sure how to help you anymore than what the other people said. Try 44 at 1.3 and if it doesn't work, then try lower.

You're running an X99-A, try the automatic OC in AI Suite?

 

But in all seriousness, run everything else at stock and just try a multiplier of 40 @ 1.2 volts.  if it's unstable, try with incrementally higher voltage until it's stable (or until you hit 1.4 volts).

When did you have the blue screen? Because seriously... if you are properly mounted and cooled, maybe 1/500 (not real stat, but I've never heard of one) recently purchased 5820k's can't hit those levels.

I'd try the automatic OC as well and see what that gets you.  From there you can manually adjust values to try and squeeze out even more performance.

it worked at 43, 1.3. I stressed the cpu for 15 min, the highest temperature was 83C at core 3. The result up to 4.3GHz. Can I be satisfied?

Uhh... Those temps are way too high for that cooler. Please remount your cpu and cooler.

Like they are 20C higher than they should be...

I mounted the cpu correctly otherwise it would not work, maybe the problem is in the thermal paste. It reaches this temperature only when the cpu is fully load but the normal temperature is 20-30C at 10% load. If I keep this settings the temperature is a problem for example when I game?

Not necessarily, but and while right now those temps are not an issue, being 20C worse than what the cooler should be capable of is not a good sign.

4.5@1.25 max temps low 60s after turning down all my fans. Reseat the cooler and apply new thermal paste.

Not all chips are equal, but haswell is literally the most equal chip architecture ever made, and I had before today never encountered someone who couldn't get 45 @ 1.3 stable on a chip that wasn't pre-q2 2015. And now his temps are WAY HIGHER than they should be, ofc I tend to think it's a different issue.

And now his temps are WAY HIGHER than they should be, ofc I tend to think it's a different issue.

Sure , haswell , because of the integrated VRM's , is much more equal , but i just don't see anything that could explain it otherwise .Maybe he just got a really crappy chip ?

The TIM wouldn't be a problem as it is solder.

 

I would remount the cooler.High temps can mess up overclocks ( when i delided my i7 , i was able to drop voltage by a few mv and still remain stable )

^This... What thermal paste you use should have almost no difference whatsoever, while your mounting/application is much more important. 

 

It is also important to know/make sure the pump/fans are working normally.

What is the TIM? How you would remount the cooler? Can you be a little more detailed? 

TIM means " thermal interface material" .It is the  material between the cpu die and the intel heat spreader.

 

Older cpus , and enthusiast class cpus like the 5820k , use solder , which provides the best results , however , on smaller dies , intel now uses thermal compound , which is less effective at transfering heat.

 

To remount the cooler , simply unscrew the block off the mounting bracket near the cpu socket , clean off the thermal paste , and replace it with new stuff.Put the cooler back on.

TIM means " thermal interface material" .It is the  material between the cpu die and the intel heat spreader.

 

Older cpus , and enthusiast class cpus like the 5820k , use solder , which provides the best results , however , on smaller dies , intel now uses thermal compound , which is less effective at transfering heat.

 

To remount the cooler , simply unscrew the block off the mounting bracket near the cpu socket , clean off the thermal paste , and replace it with new stuff.Put the cooler back on.

Which thermal paste do you suggest? The temperatures with this heatsink how should be?

Assuming your fans are running properly and not automatically set to silent or something (you NEED to check this in the fan control tab), you should be getting in the 60s max. Low 70s is bad, high 70s and 80s is unacceptable for that cooler.

 

I use noctua NT-H1 but literally almost any thermal paste will preform basically identical to each other.
