What cooler should I get for my i7-4770k?

Giki

Okay guys price isn't a problem I just want something that will fit in my case (an N600) and will cool my CPU to a comfortable level while overclocked.

I'm looking at the noctua NH-D15 or maybe the 14 But since its like 3 freaking pounds I don't know if my mother board could handle it since its gonna be hanging on its side... Should I get a case where my motherboard sits on the bottom so it wont rip my mobo in half? or Should I just forget air and go water cooled?

Thanks!

NH D15 is king of Air Cooling.

It performs closest to some of the best AIO coolers.

If going for AIO, get NZXT X61 or H100i GTX.

Intel Core i3 2100 @ 3.10GHz - Intel Stock Cooler - Zotac Geforce GT 610 2GB Synergy Edition

Intel DH61WW - Corsair® Value Select 4GBx1 DDR3 1600 MHz - Antec BP-300P PSU

WD Green 1TB - Seagate 2.5" HDD 1TB - Seagate Barracuda 500GB - Antec X1 E.

Your motherboard can definitely handle the weight, Noctua wouldn't make a cooler that could potentially break motherboards.

Gaming Desktop - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus, 32GB Cosair Vengenace LP 3600mhz, EVGA RTX 3070 XC3 Ultra,  Sabrent Rocket 4 1TB NVME SSD, WD Blue SN570 NVME SSD, 4TB Mass storage, EVGA 750W G2, Corsair 270R

Take the heat spreader off the CPU and replace it with your own TIM. You'll get like 10 degrees lower.

To answer your question, no, the NH-D15, (or the more aesthetically pleasing, Dark Rock Pro 3) will not rip apart your motherboard. That has never happened. Ever. At least not when it's in a static position.

From what I hear, 1.35V is the highest you should go with air/aio water cooler. (NH-D15 surprisingly performs just as well as most AIO. Only beaten by bigass 280mm AIO)

If you want any crazier overclock, custom water loop is your only option.

Also, this is a personal thing, I prefer air cooling over AIO water coolers. Reason being AIO has more chance of failure and annoyance. They can leak causing damage to other components or the pump can die meaning you'll have to get an RMA. Even if everything works fine it's possible to get a unit with pump noise since most AIO's uses cheap pumps. They can get annoying at idle when your system fans are quieter than the pump.

With air cooling, they perform just as well, are quieter overall, and have no risk of failure. It's a hunk of metal, doesn't break. So yea.

EDIT:
LOL, this exists, omg, 360mm aio... Eh, I guess this would be the ultimate plug and play cooler. No need to mess with custom water cooling.

Damn it's huge.

yeah I've looked at the H100i and part of me wants to just do water cooling but I know if I start down that road I will undoubtabley want to buy custom blocks and water cool my gpu... and yeah... I'll look at the NZXT X61 thanks guys!

That's because the substr8 on the Skylake CPUs is too damn thin, not an issue on Haswell.

If you might cool your GPU l8r then get a Swiftech H220-X or H240-X since it's expandable.

Yeah but most cases of it bending have been during shipping, and he doesn't even have a skylake cpu to begin with so he doesn't even need to worry about that. xD

Just thought it was funny, OP should be fine with any cooler although Liquid looks better if you have a window

I guess so? Has the capacity to do it for sure. Just that the fans might run at high RPM so it's a matter of whether or not you can accept the noise. Dark Rock Pro 3 seems to perform 3-4C worse than the NH-D15 if I remember correctly from the benchmarks I've seen.

What if I take it to a LAN party or something? Would it be safe even with a small bump?

And yeah the Dark Rock pro 3 looks cooler but it runs a bit louder and hotter(I know its only 3-5c but still...) plus I can't put Noctua fans on it without modding or getting some special mounting stuff...

That's completely fine. I'm talking about some serious abuse to the system. Such as shipping it as a package. Not specifically pointing fingers, but UPS, DHL, or whatever the heck companies, none of them is guaranteed to take good care of your package. They throw, stomp, drop, your package quite often. Two examples.

But to you though, taking it to a lan party, that sort of thing, no problem at all.

BTW, Cryorig R1 Ultimate and Phanteks PH-TC14PЕ are two other cooler that competes with NH-D15 without looking like puke.

As to the clearance issue, mind taking a picture?

Awesome!

Yeah I don't plan to ship it anywhere and if I did I would take it apart and put it all in pieces in a pelican case or something.

I'll have to wait till I get home to take some pictures.

I had forgotten about the R1 Ultimate and first time I've looked at the PH-TC14PE but, both look awesome I think the phanteks one looks a bit better to me since I could get a different color other than ugly.

I'd probably get some Noctua fans for my case later but this will tide me over until then.

Thanks!

Yea I thought so too. The fans snap on with wire thingies. So you can snap the fan on a higher position if it touched the RAM.

Fan isn't the issue, I'm more worried about the heatsink itself. Unlike NH-D15 where it has a cutout on the edge, Phantek and Cryiog doesn't. I searched around and found this measurements. So if you'd like, you can measure it yourself to ensure it'll fit for sure.
