WD Red vs Seagate NAS

Hey,

 

Im building my own NAS which I will use to store and stream data as well as host a minecraft server on it for 10 people or so. 

 

On the NAS side, which hard drive should I buy a WD Red or a Seagate NAS?

I would go with wd reds. I personally don't like Seagate. But in all honesty they are both fine. The only Seagate drives that have a bad reputation are the 3 TB drives.

im using a 4TB red right now

works very well, and the speeds are almost as good as a WD black

 

my last seagate drive was in "caution" condition after about a year or two, hoping the WD lasts longer

it should, since my WD blue lasted over 5 years, and would have lasted more had my PSU not killed it

it was still in perfect condition after those 5 years

I own Six 4TB Reds, and they've all been fine for the past year and a half. One 3TB Red in my bro's PC as a desktop drive, over 3 years old now. They're scary fast for their RPM rating, just barely slower than my Enterprise WD Re Drives. Whatever brand you use, make sure you run a extended test on it (Extended test on WD Lifeguard / Seatools for Seagate) to make sure you don't have a DOA drive...most of the time it's the shipping company's fault when your drive arrives DOA.

 

I also have two WD blacks, both over 6 years old, and the smart data is completely good still. I would vouch for WD Red. HGST NAS are faster, but they run louder / hotter. The Reds run really cool (Even when I have six of them next to each other in my SuperMicro Chassis) and quiet.

Thanks for the reply. What case you got from supermicro? Having trouble finding a suitable one from other brands.  :mellow:

I bought a used SuperMicro 24 bay rackmount chassis from Ebay. $200. I did have to buy a SAS 2 backplane for it, $300 used. Still far cheaper than the new units cost. Do keep in mind that these things are really loud. lol. I had to remove the stock fans and replace them with Be Quiet fans since the server is in my room.

 

Norco is a great budget option, but it doesn't come with the redundant power supplies, hot swap fans, a bit less build quality, and LSI Expander Backplane like the SuperMicro chassis do.

 

Unless you mean a normal PC case...then I don't know. Maybe look for cheap case with a lot of hard drive cages...

I used to sleep with 2 external disk arrays in my room filled with 15k RPM SCSI disks, omg those were loud. No idea how I actually got any sleep
