Can my 970 run a triple monitor setup?

Gaming with triple 1080p? Maybe, probably not at the highest settings though.

Not gaming? Yes.

Yes, It can.

 

If it is a FHD monitor, Don't expect to put the games on high settings and see the games running at 60 fps.

3 monitors at 1080p on;

Medium settings: Yes

High setting: Yes

Ultra: No

 

I use a GTX960 and I run 3 monitor 1080p on high on most games I have.

I can get medium/high sometimes high, single screen ultra I can get as well.

It is a hit an miss for you with that 970.

Did it with a 970, wasn't great. Can be done. With decent settings, playable for some. Not as good as one of my older cards though. Think I had the evga ssc edition as it had two dvi ports.
