PC into 50's Television [Build Log]

Polku

This build is so cool you should buy another monitor and a similar 50's tv case and make a second monitor for dual monitors

That would be bezel city... Not that this is entirely practical as it is :D.

Today I did the wiring for the front I/O. So I sleeved cables for the first time in my life and soldered first time since elementary school...

I took the lazy way out with the sleeveng not sleeving individual cables and just used some cheap phobya 6mm-sleeve I had laying aroud:

Sleevaus_1.jpg

Sleevaus_1_2.jpg

Quite fast the job moved forward alternating with soldering and the sleeving (sorry, I forgot to take pictures about the fitting of the front usb-slot):

Finally about hour ago I had all but the outer potentiometers (that will be changed to Fanmates as soon as I manage to get the old ones out) wired :

And for the final shot I took a picture from the frontside of the panel. Littlebit more cleaning to do with the buttons and should pretty up the usb-slot a little... :

Finally got the front I/O-wires done :) I chose to replace original busted potentiometers with zalman fanmates, for I allready had one laying around and got an another one cheaper than what similar potentiometre would have costed just by itself:

Then I fitted the fron panel into the case:

And for the last photo of this update, a bad shot of the finished front (battery in my camera ran out, so I didn't get good one...)

The project is moving along so nicely, that it soon becomes necessary to start to actually think, what the actual computer parts of this build will be biggrin.gif

So yesterday I started to work on the new back panel and today I reached the point when the first piece started to look like something woth taking some shots of :)

Yesterday I cutted the first panel roughly and while my camera was charging I cut it to final form and started to mock the dust/finger protectors in place:

Sommittelua.jpg

Sommittelua2.jpg

When those started to look allright it was time to draw the cutting lines and cut the hole:

Piirrettynauml.jpg

Leikattu.jpg

At last it was time to put some fans on to hold dust/finger filters and test the panel in place:

Kokeilua_paikalleen.jpg

Too bad I made a slight error in fitting and I'll have to modify the original corner support slightly:

ajatus_lipsaus.jpg

From here the journey continues tomorrow. I hope to get second third of the back panel cut and mayby even paint both and then start to instal them in place :)

Also I've started to gather some (part of it temporary) hardware to put in. First of all I've made deal from Corsair HX450 psu and HD6870 gpu. These two will most likely be also in the final version of the hardware whatever it will be. As the temporary parts I've made deal from Asus M4A78-VM Motherboard with Athlon II X2 250 cpu (also waiting to auction to end for 2x2Gb 1066Mhz DDR2 memory). These three parts are just for proof of concept, not at all final parts and I'll buy better ones when my financial situation improve :)

You have a bit of blank space down below your fans, have you thought about routing your video cable through there?

I got the temporary parts yesterday and was able to get the computer running today :)

Here's two pics:

DSC_0008-1.jpg

The white Phanteks fan is temporary placeholder as well as all the other parts (exept maybe gpu). Also I'm not too happy how the back panel turned out and I will most likely at least modify it heavily maybe even make a new one. But at least it's running and I can close the back :D

I take it the specs are machine number three in your signature?

Oh, I totally forgot to tell what specs these temp-parts has so:

ASUS M4A78-VM - Mb

Athon II X2 250 - CPU

2Gb 667Mhz DDR2 - Ram (altought I'm allready waiting for the delivery of a upgrade to 4Gb 1066Mhz ddr2)

Sapphire HD6870 1Gb - Gpu

Corsair VX550 - PSU

Random 160Gb sata HDD I had laying around.

So it won't break any records, but is adequate placeholder :D

Solid enough rig though if you had $200 to put into it you could build an fm2 based system with an athlon in it. Would kick ass for sure.

The temporary hardware specs are on post #66 :) They are not in more visible place because most of the parts are just temporary and will be replaced with better ones when I got the money to buy just what I want in terms of performance and looks.

Gaming would be the main use, but the reason why I desided to started this project, was because I wanted to do something different, something more than just build another computer in store bought case for change :)
