Was Android actually Google's third operating system choice for its new Pixel C tablet?

 

Introducing a new Chrome OS form factor, only to have it superseded by a crazy hybrid OS a year or two later, probably wouldn't be received well by customers. Chrome OS customers, a large portion of which are schools and businesses, would especially value platform stability. Convincing those customers to move over to the new hybrid OS will be hard enough, and creating and then killing a new form factor in the span of two years wouldn't inspire a lot of confidence in Google. It's about not further complicating what will already be a rocky transition.

This narrative explains why the Pixel C seems so lackluster today; it wasn't supposed to be this way! It was supposed to be a flagship Chrome OS tablet worthy of the "Pixel" name. It seems those plans were canceled, though, and what we're left with is the Android-powered Pixel C—just another Android tablet.

 

 

The idea of making a Chrome-OS-only tablet was bad, the idea of making a dual-OS tablet was great, the idea to make it an Android tablet was even worse. I can understand why the first idea was canceled but not why the second one was canceled. It seemed like a great idea to me, much better than what Google eventually did with the Pixel C. The main problem with it seems that it's just a stock Android tablet, inferior in many ways to the custom Android versions that other manufacturers offer. In my opinion Google really had a great opportunity to make a product that is different from others, but because of software made a run-of-the-mill product that doesn't offer anything new.

Chrome OS for sure. It looks pretty great, and seems like it would be quite usable with Chrome OS on it.

Well for starters, just so it's different than a surface, since those already exist.  After that, just insert any reason(s) someone might use linux over windows here

Chrome OS is great on Chromebooks, but when that Chromebook is touch-screen, too, you'll notice that (no matter how much the blogger, reporter, reviewer ices the cake), it's barely touched. They're about to scroll normally and then go, "hey, I can use the touchpad", not using it out of instinct because it's.. well, a gimmick.

They should modify the ChromeOS to include an android UI when in tablet mode, and the full UI when in docked mode, with an easy to manually switch between
