Compromise: build a custom gaming rig and dual boot osx and ubuntu.

Why dual boot OSX and Ubuntu, surely it would be better to dual boot a version of Windows and OSX.

(Unless you mean Windows 10 when you see OSX?)

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

I3 4150, Intel HD graphics, corsair CX750M, 4gb ram, Asus H81M-E, corsair 230T, Intel stock cooler WD Green 2TB Gigabyte 550TI

Thats what it was, I was thinking it stood for Operating System 10 meaning Windows 10 but that makes alot more sense.

Assuming your budget is $2k (what these 5k iMacs cost), you can do this for less:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($179.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($53.55 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Sandisk SSD PLUS 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($54.98 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($39.10 @ SuperBiiz)
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon R9 380 4GB PCS+ Video Card  ($179.99 @ Newegg)
Case: NZXT S340 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($56.10 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 520W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($47.60 @ SuperBiiz)
Monitor: HP Z27q 60Hz 27.0" Monitor  ($1170.17 @ Amazon)
Total: $1811.47
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

It'll be significantly better in gaming since it doesn't use crap-tastic laptop components, and you can even throw in a $100 Windows license and still come in under the price of the iMac.

If we're talking price to performance or even just specs in general, Apple will always lose unless they have a weird monopoly on the tech.

...that being said, 5k is stupid right now. If you must, just get a 4k screen and call it a day. You won't be able to drive games well on 5k and scaling things up to 5k does NOT involve integer ratios from 1080p, so it's not a good resolution for things like content consumption. If it were me and you absolutely had to have a high resolution display, I'd do the following:

You can easily slap in a second R9 390 to drive that 4k display for even demanding games.

If he wants to drive a 4K display, surely he should use that left over $500 from the second build to get a Fury X or 980 Ti...

Also, an 850W PSU for a 6600K and R9 390?!

Shit, sorry. Only just noticed the suggestion of a second R9 390... With the budget you might as well have just included that anyway.

Considering his original plan involved a mobile GPU that wasn't even a high-end mobile GPU, I figured a single 390 would probably be sufficient. I left room for expansion because @4k it can get demanding if he decides to play AAA titles.

If your primary goal is to game then you shouldn't be considering an iMac, you'd be better off looking at an ITX or HTPC sort of custom build with a high-end monitor. Don't get me wrong, the iMac 5K is great, but honestly you're much better off investing in a custom PC to meet your gaming needs.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

What resolution are you talking about wanting? As well, what games will you be playing on it? Because with 3.5k you can build a wicked setup.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/BygzQ7 Tada!

The build is red and black, it might not be great so you may want to have others have a look and see what they think, the CD drive is there for good measure and for Windows if ya need to install it via a disk, the monitor is a 144HZ TN G-sync panel as I don't know what resolution or if you prefer TN or IPS, so I chose the best for gaming.

The PSU should do the job safely.

And there is no need to fork out on Titan's when a 980 TI is very close to their performance.
