Pretty much. If you were going for a 980, you should invest in a 390X instead.

 

Non-reference 980 Ti > Fury X > reference 980 Ti > 390X > 980 > 390 > 970 > 380X > 380 > 960 > etc...

980ti destroyes the 980. Ya its worth it. But buy a custom design.

Is the price for a 980ti worth it or should i just get a 980

 

The 980 at its MSRP  has bad  performance to price ratio compared to the 980ti and the 970 that's below it  the 390X is a bit cheaper and is about the same perf

You can get an MSI 980 Ti of newegg for $559 after rebate. That's a damn fine deal.
