The point is the picture is wrong and the 580 comes with a different cooler. I know both are Fermi and in fact I'll do you one better, the reason the 580 ran a bit cooler was because GF110 was basically GF100 without some of the pro features like ECC memory and stuff.

Oh, I just looked at the GIF again. You're referring to the fact that the meme says "580 Ultra" - fair enough. Whoever made the meme probably just pulled a random image off Google Image search :P

How can you make a meme about something when you don't even know what it looks like?

Must have been an ATI fan.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

This means I'm next  I hope my 7990 can survive for couple more years

probably longer than that, it shares a lot of things with even fiji cards. If this news are anything to go by, I'd expect it to get support for at least another 4 years

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

GCN 1.0 is merely similar in base configuration to Fiji (GCN 1.2)

there is A LOT of difference there. Even some of the basic layout is different.

Sure, but I don't expect them to drop gcn 1.0 support while they're still using gcn at all

maybe not at first. but GCN is lacking a lot of feature supports and in general, has some issues when it comes to actual performance.

it was great when it came out 4 years ago, and it should last 2-3 years more. 4 would be pushing it.

Isn't the 7970 still sold as a rebrand?

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Nope. Although I've seen lots of reviewers call the 380X (Tonga) a refresh/rebrand/etc of 7970 (Tahiti) which makes no sense to me, but hey, I'm not the professional reviewer...

it werent THAT much better. but indeed, it was better.

still hawaii beats both of them in consumption though :|

nope. 7970 GHz = 280X (GCN1.0)

current 380/380X is based on R9 285, which is GCN1.2 based.

370 is based on the R9 265 which is basically a underclocked HD 7850 (GCN 1.0)

the Pitcairn GPU is the "long lasting" one.... this is its second rebrand and third appearance in the market...(launch, rebrand, refresh (minor clock/memory bump)

I beg to differ - 480 draws a LOT of power

just get a R9 380X (GCN 1.2) and a Haswell i5 4460

you'd be set for years with that

I know. :) I have a plan this winter. I will build this under my sigs. ;)

Lasting longer is different from being supported longer. They will probably change architecture soon, but that doesn't mean they won't push out more drivers for gcn

I still didn't see why people preferred a 480 over a 5870 ._.

5870 was a single gpu and performed slightly better than the 480

Again, that's not a 580. It's a 480.

It didn't actually seem that long ago that the 5870, then the most powerful single GPU until the 480 and also the very first to support DX11 arrived, was launched. Then again, this of course doesn't mean these parts will stop working.

Also, I'm not sure I understand why RISC would be inherently better than VLIW, especially on GPUs.

RISC can do better at Compute and gaming. Whereas VLIW is kind of OK for gaming but absolutely rubbish at compute.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.
