idk about AMD CPUs, I know those can only go up to 62C, not sure about what security measures they have

AMD CPU trottle at around 80c as well...i know :P lol

The FX 9xxx was made for overclocking, and is just rebranded 8320/8350s that are factory OCed.  Unless you have some OCing interest of that level then yes they are useless as you can get the other two for like 100 bucks cheaper than those 2 options.

except that's just marketing

since its factory overclocked, you can barely get another 100 MHz out of them without it becoming unstable

and since they are pretty much running at the limit or voltage and TDP you need a custom watercooling loop and a really strong motherboard (with lots of power phases)

so yeah, its like the worst CPU for overclocking lol

They thermal throttle too, or the boards are designed to make them.

I have seen more people kill their motherboards by putting a 9590 in them than I have seen people kill their GPU by putting it in an oven... xD

They did it because some guy got like a world record off the 8320, so they wanted to profit and make up for some loses.

makes sense :)

Okay before this gets locked I'm just gonna wrap up saying quick that FX 9000s are absolutely pointless to Intel counterparts which can be done cheaper.

(Ignore HDDs I'm lazy clearing builds)

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($242.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: MSI B85-G43 GAMING ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($70.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $358.86
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

i7 equivalent without iGPU, for fact delivers better performance because of IPC and Quad core hyperthreading

CPU: AMD FX-9370 4.4GHz 8-Core Processor  ($284.86 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard  ($171.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $501.73

A lot more expensive, can't be overclocked anymore, very high TDP, beefy mobo required, good cooling needed.
All these requirements/drawbacks while delivering lower performance, this is why AMD FX generally is not recommended but if you can't afford the Intel Xeon then go for a 8370E

                                                                                                                 Setup

Actually, they were originally Opterons that didn't meet server standards.  AMD didn't invest as much in the desktop side, and thus we have FXs.  It is just a coincidence that some random OC guy managed to push them that high, and AMD profitted off that.  The 9xxx chips are just the 8320 and 8350 factory OCed to help OCers get closer to 5GHz.

I know that-but unlike Opteron the FX line is unlocked-which is why I'm saying its made to be overclocked.

It's funny that you mention personal experience from an average user, because I'm an average user with personal experience with an FX-8350 (OC'd @ 4.9GHz) and an i7-4790k (stock) and I can't recommend AMD at all.

Funny how that works.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Is everyone so insecure that you can't have a discussion about AMD without having to make it about Intel? The question wasn't which is better Intel or AMD. The question was which AMD is the best. I'm actually curious about this. So can we talk about AMD or do we need to change this sub forum title to "Intel n stuff"?

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Its quite simple, the FX 8350. The FX 9590 was and is just a cash grab since AMD tried to sell it for between $920-980 originally, thinking that the 5GHz rated clock speed would suck people in.

That was my thought on it, but I don't have any experience with them. Are they good for Photoshop? Wife is building a PC to do medium graphic design on a professional level.

Think 220W power consumption (plus the associated heat output)+good water cooler+good motherboard, they will do the job but at a substantial operating cost.

Not a concern. Performance is a concern. I gave her my old Vaporx 290 and want something that will keep up with it. Keeping all options open.

I am I'm curious about AMD CPUs

FX-6300 is good enough for games

FX-8350 is better for games

FX-6300 using all cores is equal to a i5-4690k

FX-8370 using all cores is equal to i7-5960x (in games)

Get FX-6300, overclock to 4.4GHz, or leave it at stock. You can use the stock cooler with better thermal paste to get temps of ~55c at stock, just adjust your fan curve if you want it quiet

But first, let's talk about parallel universes.

Spoiler

Intel i7-4790k undervolt, NVidia EVGA GTX 980Ti SC Reference, NVidia EVGA GTX 480 SC Reference, ASUS Z97-A/USB3.1, SK Hynix SL308 240GB, WD Green 2TB, Hynix 1333 8GB (4x2), XFX Core Pro 850w, NH-U12S, 4x NF-F12's, Sennheiser HD 558's, Blue Yeti, Corsair K70 (red), Logitech MX Master, XBox One Controller, ASUS VG248QE 144Hz, HP 2010i

Compare it to the price of a xeon with hyperthreading

Thats not how it works lad. Most games only USE Core ZERO.  The rest are there as a little party helpers, making sure the bloody guy doesn't die.

sad thing, that IS HOW IT WORKS M8

It's not 2004, games use most of the cores available now. My FX-6300, cores 0, 2, and 4 are 75%, the others are 45-50%, demanding games that are multithreaded, they use all cores at around ~70%
