Visual Studio Code now open source. And Visual Studio can debug Linux target programs.

Microsoft announces today at the Microsoft's Connect event 2 news related to Visual Studio.

Visual Studio Code, a powerful multi-language programming text editor for Windows, MacOS, and Linux based OS, with extension support (has already over 60 extensions for it), is now open source. This goes hand in hand, with Microsoft making a large part of the .NET library (a powerful, well done, library for developers to use) open source.

The last version of Visual Studio got an update, featuring the ability to develop and debug Linux based programs running on a server or IoT devices, thank to the addition remote debugging using GDB of Linux software.

In smaller news, Xamarin 4 will be supported in Visual Studio 2015 once you install 'Update 1' update of the software (will be released Nov 30th). Xamarin, by Xamarin, is a technology used to develop an app in 1 language (C#), and can be exported as a Windows 10 Mobile app, Android, and iOS, making developers life easier, to have 1 code base.

Will try this out when released.

Is that the thing that Linux users do all the time when talking about Windows?

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Visual Studio Code pretty much a fork of Atom? If that's the case then they are open sourcing their fork of an open source editor.

Not bad, but not that exciting either.

It's based on the Electron framework, but uses the Visual Studio Online editor for the actual functionality. So no, it's not a fork of Atom.
