Whatever you do, don't buy the schiit magni/modni combo. I can't get it through that it is a badly designed amplifier and DAC that looks good. Most of their other products are okay, but are a bit expensive.

 

If you are looking to spend less on something that sounds good, the objective2 amp/DAC combo will fit your budget.

I will back up the O2/ODAC recommendation as i have an O2 amp myself and its dead neutral  compared to my e11 witch has a hint of warmth to the low end (because of the phase change) 

 

I have tried both the Hd 600 and Hd 650s and all i can say is

the HD 600 over the HD 650 any day, music is sooo much fuller with a proper amp with the hd 600

 

O2/ODAC is a very good combo for both HD 600 and HD 650s

 

(judged on mesuerments)

HE 500 over the HD 600 and day

 

*Note

He 500 will not be able to be driven by the O2 you will need something like the Asgard to be able to push orthos, i recommend getting the ODAC standalone and the Asgard if you want to go that route

 

I will also never recommend tube amps as they just distort the sound, i prefer a neutral amp and only the headphones to coulor the sound

The magni/modi is simply not better than the o2/ODAC and proper measurements can prove that. Anyone with an EE background can easily pick apart the circuits that they (schiit) produce. I don't want to raise an argument but with two points I can prove this (the schiit has higher output impedance, and a fixed high gain setting) that the o2/ODAC does not have.

That 6x gain is just silly.  Watching people on head-fi put attenuators on the Magni's inputs is enough to disuade me, personally.

 

I didn't know about the higher output impedance.  They advertise a near impossible 0.1 Ohms on their site.  They wouldn't lie, now, would they?

I highly doubt its .1 ohms, the o2 is .5 ohms which is incredibly low, most hover around the 2-4 ohm margin. I wouldn't trust any numbers without proof from measurements.
