MicroSoft's Project Astoria on hold

We're committed to offering developers many options to bring their apps to the Windows Platform, including bridges available now for Web and iOS, and soon Win32. The Astoria bridge is not ready yet, but other tools offer great options for developers. For example, the iOS bridge enables developers to write a native Windows Universal app which calls UWP APIs directly from Objective-C, and to mix and match UWP and iOS concepts such as XAML and UIKit. Developers can write apps that run on all Windows 10 devices and take advantage of native Windows features easily. We're grateful to the feedback from the development community and look forward to supporting them as they develop apps for Windows 10.

what is Project Astoria? it's Microsoft plan to bring Android emulation to Windows Phone, specifically Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile

so far it's not clear what's the precise reason the project is behind, could be legal, financial or simply technical

MicroSoft has removed the Android subsystem from the recent Windows 10 Mobile Insider builds, including build 10586 (commercial shipping release)

Yeah, The android subsystem in W10M made the performance degrade over time (The longer you use it, the slower it got) and probably made W10M very insecure.

And for the love of Christ, they haven't been called MicroSoft since the 70's - early 80's

Wow that's sad. The biggest negative point about Windows Phone is the lack of apps. That would have helped... Hope that with universal apps, it will be enough to get developpers on board.

Hey! I was gonna talk about this.! Whatever. You win this time :( .

Basically the idea  was to make the transition for app developers to be seamless but unfortunately it didn't work out and so they're moving on.

TBH if your incapable of making a windows phone app once you've made an android or IOS app you are simply absolutely stupid. It's easier to make windows phone apps than it is for Android and/or IOS.

Well this means devs will have to be creative and use the features Windows Phone can offer with Microsoft's APIs and IDE.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Well they didn't move one. It was put on hold.

So either:

1- They wanted to focus on delivering Windows 10 Mobile out the door. So they put everyone on polishing the OS and bug fixes. And will return back to the project after.

2- The approach they took is no good, and re-evaluate a new approach, in either the way to implement it, or something completely different (maybe like the bridge from iOS)

So yes, they could be evaluating for cancellation, sure. But, as it was put on hold, and the site is still up, it would probably be #1 or #2 above.

Maybe it will come with Windows 10.1

IDK. All i know is that Windows 10 Mobile is know RTM. The final build has arrived. Build 10586.

10.1 will come in like 2016/2017 though.  1st wave is getting 10.0 in december and second wave is getting 10.0 in february.

Yup. It is in their best interest in delivering a solid OS phone, than a broken one and slow, get poor reviews (more than what it will get), and just to have less than a handful of Android apps, and have Windows Phone 8 users wait even longer for their update.

I think its a combination of those and the need to actually do a bit more work on it before it can be used without slowing devices down.

Well first they need devices running Windows 10 for devs to be able to test and create apps.
